Short-term changes in algal blooms and phytoplankton community after the passage of Super Typhoon Lekima in a temperate and inner sea (Bohai Sea) in China

Tao Jiang et al.

Summary: Extensive multi-species harmful algal blooms (HABs) were triggered by Super Typhoon Lekima in Laizhou Bay. After the typhoon, the abundance of phytoplankton and Chl a concentration significantly increased. The study suggests that typhoons may introduce freshwater and nutrients, leading to changes in the phytoplankton community and HABs in temperate inner bays.

Decreasing trend of kuroshio intrusion and its effect on the chlorophyll-a concentration in the Luzon Strait, South China Sea

Yi Chang et al.

Summary: Material exchange between oceans and currents plays a crucial role in biogeochemical processes. This study examined the changes in major current systems, particularly the Kuroshio intrusion in the Luzon Strait, and their impacts on marine ecology. The findings suggest that the Kuroshio intrusion, Chl-a concentrations, and current speed in the Luzon Strait have decreased since the 1990s. Meanwhile, the speed of the Kuroshio Current in the eastern Philippines has increased, curbing its westward intrusion into the Luzon Strait. This shift in the current system may have weakened biogeochemical processes in the South China Sea.

Effects of high temperature and nitrogen availability on the growth and composition of the marine diatom Chaetoceros pseudocurvisetus

Lana Flanjak et al.

Summary: Environmental stresses, such as temperature increase and nitrogen deficiency, have significant impacts on the physiological and biochemical processes of marine diatom Chaetoceros pseudocurvisetus. The response to these stresses varies, with nitrogen limitation affecting cell growth and reproduction, and high temperature influencing cell death and lipid remodelling.

Influence of sequential tropical cyclones on phytoplankton blooms in the northwestern South China Sea

Wang Tongyu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the upper ocean responses to sequential tropical cyclones in the northwestern South China Sea in 2011. It found that the passage of tropical cyclones led to prolonged sea surface low temperature regions and two phytoplankton blooms, driven by upwelling and near-inertial turbulence mixing. The enhancement of turbulent mixing in the upper ocean helped transport nutrient-rich cold waters from the deep layer to the euphotic layer, maintaining the low temperature region and promoting phytoplankton growth.

Sinking Rate and Community Structures of Autumn Phytoplankton Responses to Mesoscale Physical Processes in the Western South China Sea

Yingjie Mao et al.

Summary: During a comprehensive investigation cruise in autumn 2016 in the western South China Sea, a total of 108 phytoplankton species were found, with Bacillariophyta and Dinophyta as the main communities. The sinking rate of phytoplankton ranged from 0.12 to 3.17 m day(-1) and there was no significant correlation with environmental parameters. The study also estimated carbon flux using the sinking rate of phytoplankton, showing significant influence of mesoscale eddy processes on phytoplankton community and sinking rate.

Elevated organic carbon pulses persist in estuarine environment after major storm events

Eero Asmala et al.

Summary: Estuaries play a crucial role in regulating the transport of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from land to ocean. The impact of tropical cyclones on terrestrial DOC in estuaries can overwhelm the abiotic and biotic degradation capacity, leading to an enhanced shunt of terrestrial carbon to the coastal ocean.
