On the phenology and seeding potential of sea-ice microalgal species

Maria A. van Leeuwe et al.

Summary: Sea ice is an important habitat for microalgal species and can serve as a seeding source for phytoplankton blooms after ice melt. A study conducted at Rothera Research Station in the Western Antarctic Peninsula revealed clear patterns in species succession within sea-ice algal communities. The study also found that microalgal communities of haptophytes and chlorophytes will benefit from changes in sea-ice cover, with unknown implications for carbon fluxes and higher trophic levels.

Advances in altimetric snow depth estimates using bi-frequency SARAL and CryoSat-2 Ka-Ku measurements

Florent Garnier et al.

Summary: The altimetric snow depth (ASD) product is compared to various snow depth products in both the Arctic and Antarctic. Results show that ASD has a mean bias of about 6.5 cm compared to the alternative Ka-Ku DuST product in the Arctic. Validation data also demonstrate the consistency of ASD, with a correlation of 0.66 and a RMSE of about 6 cm in Arctic comparisons.
