Optimal magnetoelectric coupling performance of Terfenol-D/PZT composites in resonance state under bias magnetic field

Bin Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, laminated magnetoelectric composites with different thickness ratios were optimized, fabricated and experimentally investigated. The results showed that the coupling voltage output increases linearly with the increase of DC bias magnetic field, and the ME voltage coefficient increases over 100 times in the resonance state for the optimal laminate. The DC bias magnetic field significantly affects the ME voltage coefficient, while having little effect on the resonant frequency.

Nonlinear magnetoelectric coupling in magnetostrictive-piezoelectric composites

Chien-hong Lin et al.

Summary: Two micromechanical formulations were established for analyzing nonlinear magnetoelectric coupling in composite materials with different connectivities. The study showed that the magnetoelectric coupling in the composites can be modulated by the connectivity and constituent proportion, and the field-dependent magnetoelectric responses lead to significant differences between linear and nonlinear predictions.

Recent Progress in Devices Based on Magnetoelectric Composite Thin Films

Deepak Rajaram Patil et al.

Summary: The strain-driven interfacial coupling between ferromagnetic and ferroelectric constituents in magnetoelectric (ME) composites makes them potential candidates for novel multifunctional devices. ME thin-film devices have shown promising applications, with (Pb1-xZrx)TiO3 (PZT), Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-PbTiO3 (PMN-PT), Aluminium nitride (AlN), and Al1-xScxN as commonly used piezoelectric constituents, and FeGa, FeGaB, FeCo, FeCoB, and Metglas as commonly used magnetostrictive constituents. ME field sensors offer a limit of detection in the fT/Hz(1/2) range at the mechanical resonance frequency, with noise floors of 1-100 pT/Hz(1/2) at 1 Hz. ME antennas operate at very-high frequency and ultra-high frequency ranges, and have potential applications in biomedical devices and wearable antennas. Integrated tunable inductors and band-pass filters, along with miniaturized ME energy harvesters, are also discussed.

An analytical model for nonlinear magnetoelectric effect in laminated composites

Yang Shi et al.

Summary: This paper presents an analytical and explicit theoretical model for the nonlinear magnetoelectric effect in laminated composites, taking into account the multi-field coupled properties of magnetostrictive materials. Analytical solutions of nonlinear ME voltages in various modes are obtained, predicting that the frequency-multiplying behavior observed in the composites can be tuned by bias magnetic field. The optimal bias field for maximum linear voltage and zero nonlinear voltage is obtained.
