Diffusion Weighted Imaging of the Abdomen and Pelvis: Recent Technical Advances and Clinical Applications

Ting Yang et al.

Summary: Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) is an important technique in abdominal and pelvic imaging, capable of reflecting water molecule diffusion and detecting malignancies. However, image distortion and artifacts in single-shot DWI limit its clinical use. Recent technical advances in DWI, such as simultaneous multi-slice excitation, computed or reduced field-of-view techniques, and advanced shimming methods, can improve acquisition time, image quality, and robustness in abdominopelvic DWI. This review discusses the advances and future perspectives of each DWI approach, providing an overview of technical improvements and research directions in abdominal and pelvic imaging.

Simultaneous multi-slice accelerated diffusion-weighted imaging with higher spatial resolution for patients with liver metastases from neuroendocrine tumours

J. Xu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the imaging characteristics of simultaneous multi-slice accelerated diffusion-weighted imaging for detecting lesions in patients with neuroendocrine tumour liver metastases. The findings showed that SMS-DWI had higher spatial resolution and better lesion detection compared to conventional DWI. The use of motion correction in DWI improved the test-retest variability near the liver edge.

Feasibility study of simultaneous multislice diffusion kurtosis imaging with different acceleration factors in the liver

Hui Xu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the feasibility of diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) based on simultaneous multislice diffusion-weighted imaging (SMS-DWI) in the liver. It found that SMS-DWI with an acceleration factor of 2 is feasible for the liver, resulting in considerable reductions in scan time while maintaining similar image quality, comparable DKI parameters, and ADC values compared with those of conventional DWI.

Diffusion-Weighted Imaging Reflects Tumor Grading and Microvascular Invasion in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Alexey Surov et al.

Summary: The study found that minimum ADC reflects tumor grading in HCC, while both minimum ADC and D can predict MVI in HCC. Therefore, these DWI parameters should be estimated for pretreatment tumor stratification in each HCC lesion.
