Amplified Overhauser DNP with Selective Deuteration: Attenuation of Double-Quantum Cross-Relaxation

Ravi Shankar Palani et al.

Summary: In this study, selective 2H labeling of BDPA was utilized to investigate the dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) mechanism of the Overhauser Effect (OE) in insulating solids. It was found that the alpha and gamma 1H spins on the fluorene rings were responsible for generating a positive bulk polarization, while the phenyl 1H spins contributed negative enhancements that attenuated the OE-DNP. Phenyl-d5-BDPA showed over 50% improvement in OE-DNP enhancement compared to h21-BDPA, achieving a maximum of approximately 90 at 14.1 T and 5 kHz MAS.

Resonant Mixing Dynamic Nuclear Polarization

Yifan Quan et al.

Summary: We propose a new mechanism for dynamic nuclear polarization called Resonant Mixing (RM). It arises from the evolution of the density matrix for a simple electron-nucleus coupled spin pair subject to weak microwave irradiation, similar to the solid effect. However, unlike the solid effect, RM is optimal when the microwave field is on-resonance and involves the mixing of states by the microwave field together with the electron-nuclear coupling. We argue that this mechanism is responsible for the observed dispersive-shaped DNP field profile for trityl samples near the electron paramagnetic resonance center.

Y Dynamic Nuclear Polarization for Sensitivity Enhancement in Biomolecular Solid-State NMR

Thomas Biedenbaender et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the development and application of dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) in biomolecular solid-state NMR, especially in studies under fast MAS and high magnetic field, as well as the DNP mechanisms, polarizing agents, and sample constitution methods. Biomolecular NMR has a wide range of applications in areas such as membrane proteins, amyloid fibrils, large biomolecular assemblies, and biomaterials.

Efficient Pulsed Dynamic Nuclear Polarization with the X-Inverse-X Sequence

Venkata SubbaRao Redrouthu et al.

Summary: Pulsed dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is a promising approach to enhance the sensitivity of high-resolution magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR. A new DNP pulse sequence, XiX DNP, has been introduced with a faster transfer of polarization from electrons to H-1, resulting in a 2-fold higher gain in sensitivity compared to existing sequences.

1H detection and dynamic nuclear polarization-enhanced NMR of Aβ1-42 fibrils

Salima Bahri et al.

Summary: Magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy has been widely used to study the high-resolution structures of amyloid-beta (A beta) and other fibrils, but it suffers from low sensitivity. In this study, the drawbacks of MAS NMR were overcome by using two relatively recent techniques: H-1 detection and dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP). The results showed improved sensitivity and allowed for nearly complete resonance assignment and structural analysis of A beta fibrils.

Designing broadband pulsed dynamic nuclear polarization sequences in static solids

Nino Wili et al.

Summary: Dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) is a technique that transfers thermal polarization from unpaired electrons to NMR-active nuclei via microwave irradiation. This study presents novel design principles based on single-spin vector effective Hamiltonian theory for developing new broadband DNP pulse sequences and demonstrates their effectiveness.

Large Room Temperature Bulk DNP of 13C via P1 Centers in Diamond

Daphna Shimon et al.

Summary: In this study, we achieved hyperpolarization of 13C nuclei in diamond at room temperature using microwave-induced dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) technique, with enhancements of over 100-fold and improvement in signal averaging of the 1% abundant 13C spins by over 10,000-fold. Different enhancement features were observed for the central and outer nuclear spin manifolds, and frequency-chirped millimeter-wave excitation was found to improve the enhancements for the outer spin manifolds. The findings of this study have implications for spectroscopic studies with better chemical shift resolution at room temperature.

Overhauser Dynamic Nuclear Polarization with Selectively Deuterated BDPA Radicals

Summary: In this study, the role of hyperfine couplings in BDPA radicals was investigated using EPR and DNP measurements. The results demonstrate that deuterating the fluorene moieties can change the polarity enhancement of the Overhauser effect.
