Drip irrigation with nanobubble oxygenated treated wastewater improves soil aeration

Shahar Baram et al.

Summary: The experiment results showed that drip irrigation with oxygenated nanobubbles treated wastewater not only increased lettuce yield, but also improved the growth status of roots and leaves, especially in poorly aerated clayey soils. Therefore, drip irrigation with nanobubbles oxygenated treated wastewater should be considered as an effective method to improve soil oxygen availability and alleviate soil hypoxia.

Wastewater irrigation and crop yield: A meta-analysis

Wang Han-jie et al.

Summary: The effect of wastewater irrigation on crop yield varies in the literature, making it difficult to comprehensively evaluate its role in global food security. Domestic and breeding wastewater irrigation significantly increases crop yield, while industrial wastewater has a negative effect. Experimental design and fertilizer use contribute to the divergent crop yield effects. The existing literature mainly focuses on the short-run effect, and the long-run impact should be an important research question in the future.

Propagation of soil moisture sensing uncertainty into estimation of total soil water, evapotranspiration and irrigation decision-making

Kiran Sharma et al.

Summary: Soil moisture sensors exhibit varying accuracy under different soil types and calibration types, with installation orientation having no impact on sensor accuracy. Site-specific calibration can significantly improve the estimation accuracy of TSW, ETc and IT in different soil types.

Modeling the fate and human health impacts of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in reclaimed wastewater irrigation for agriculture

Abrar Shahriar et al.

Summary: Wastewater reclamation and reuse for agriculture can lead to the accumulation of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in crops and animals, posing potential health risks to humans. Modeling techniques can help evaluate the fate and human health effects of these contaminants in reclaimed wastewater reuse for agriculture.

Irrigation with treated wastewater containing nanobubbles to aerate soils and reduce nitrous oxide emissions

Shahar Baram et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve soil aeration, nitrogen transformations, nitrous oxide emissions, and crop yield by using drip irrigation with oxygen nanobubbles (ONB) aerated treated wastewater (TWW) in clayey soils. The research found that nitrate was the dominant nitrogen form, with ONB treatment reducing nitrous oxide emissions. Results suggest that ONB-aerated TWW irrigation could effectively enhance soil aeration, reduce N2O emissions, and nitrogen leachiness in agricultural activities.

A review of geothermal integrated desalination: A sustainable solution to overcome potential freshwater shortages

Mitul Prajapati et al.

Summary: Access to safe drinking water has increased significantly in almost every part of the world over the past few decades, but the UN predicts that by 2026, more than half of the world's population will face water scarcity. Desalination technologies, including thermal and membrane-based methods, provide an alternative source of water. To meet the high energy demand of desalination processes, renewable energy sources such as wind, geothermal, and solar power can be utilized. Geothermal energy integrated desalination processes should be seriously considered as an alternative and renewable energy source for water desalination.

Data-driven appraisal of renewable energy potentials for sustainable freshwater production in Africa

Paolo De Angelis et al.

Summary: Clean water scarcity is a major global issue affecting millions of people worldwide, with nearly half of those lacking access to safe water living in Africa. Despite this, Africa has untapped potential in renewable energy production, which could be utilized to address water shortages. Data-driven approaches are crucial for analyzing possible scenarios and developing policies to combat water scarcity in the region.

Subsurface drip irrigation reduces cadmium accumulation of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants in upland soil

Yuan Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that subsurface drip irrigation significantly reduced the cadmium content in roots, shoots, and fruits, increased yield, and improved root growth and activity in soil at a depth of 20-40 cm compared to other treatments, although the cadmium concentration in the rhizosphere was not significantly decreased. The microbial population and enzyme activities in the rhizosphere of subsurface drip irrigation and alternate-rows irrigation were basically higher than that of surface drip irrigation and conventional furrow irrigation.

Wastewater reuse for crop irrigation: Crop yield, soil and human health implications based on giardiasis epidemiology

Lays Paulino Leonel et al.

Summary: Agriculture is a major water consumer on the planet, with 70% of global water use estimated for this activity. Wastewater reuse is seen as a viable alternative to supply the water demand of the agricultural sector, but is still in an incipient stage in some regions.
