Association Between 3 Doses of mRNA COVID-19 Vaccine and Symptomatic Infection Caused by the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron and Delta Variants

Emma K. Accorsi et al.

Summary: Assessing the performance of COVID-19 vaccines against the Omicron variant is crucial for public health guidance. This study found that receiving three doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine was associated with a lower likelihood of symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to being unvaccinated or receiving two doses. These findings suggest that three doses of mRNA vaccine provide protection against both Omicron and Delta variants, though the protection against Omicron may be slightly lower.

Duration of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) Infectivity: When Is It Safe to Discontinue Isolation?

Chanu Rhee et al.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 is most contagious around symptom onset, with infectivity rapidly decreasing to near-zero afterwards; mild-moderately ill patients can safely discontinue isolation after about 10 days, while severely-critically ill and immunocompromised patients may need 15 days. The longest duration associated with replication-competent virus is 20 days.

Psychiatric morbidity and protracted symptoms after COVID-19

Burc Cagri Poyraz et al.

Summary: The study revealed that recovered COVID-19 patients may experience substantial psychological distress, including PTSD, anxiety, and/or depression, in the first few months after the acute infection. Protracted symptoms were common during this period and closely linked to posttraumatic symptoms.

Postintensive Care Syndrome in Survivors of Critical Illness Related to Coronavirus Disease 2019: Cohort Study From a New York City Critical Care Recovery Clinic*

Miguel A. Martillo et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the characteristics of post-intensive care syndrome in cognitive, physical, and psychiatric domains in 2019 coronavirus disease ICU survivors. The results showed that 91% of ICU survivors met diagnostic criteria for post-intensive care syndrome, with impairments in the physical, psychiatric, and cognitive domains. These findings emphasize the importance of planning for appropriate post-ICU care for this high-risk population.

Long COVID or post-COVID-19 syndrome: putative pathophysiology, risk factors, and treatments

Shin Jie Yong

Summary: Long COVID or post-COVID-19 syndrome is a poorly understood condition that affects survivors with symptoms like fatigue, dyspnoea, cognitive impairments, and more. The pathophysiology, risk factors, and treatments are still lacking in literature, but potential treatments may include rehabilitation training and repurposed drugs from similar conditions. Further research is needed to substantiate risk factors and treatment options.

Central Sensitization Phenotypes in Post Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 Infection (PASC): Defining the Post COVID Syndrome

Dennis M. Bierle et al.

Summary: The aim of the study was to develop criteria for description of Post COVID syndrome based on analysis of patients at Mayo Clinic Rochester. Through thorough review using DELPHI method, 42 cases with persistent central sensitization symptoms after acute COVID-19 were identified as Post COVID syndrome (PoCoS). The study found that pain, fatigue, dyspnea, and orthostatic intolerance were the most common symptoms among these PoCoS patients.
