Variation in cis-regulation of a NAC transcription factor contributes to tolerance in wheat

Hude Mao et al.

Summary: Drought is a major limitation to wheat production worldwide, and understanding the genetic components determining drought tolerance is crucial for wheat breeding. In this study, we identified a wheat NAC gene (TaNAC071-A) that is strongly associated with drought tolerance. Overexpression of TaNAC071-A improved drought tolerance in wheat through increased expression of stress-responsive genes and improved water-use efficiency. We also found that a 108-bp insertion in the promoter region of TaNAC071-A contributes to variation in drought tolerance among wheat accessions. Importantly, introgression of this insertion allele into drought-sensitive cultivars improved their drought tolerance, making it a valuable genetic resource for wheat breeding.

The wheat ABA receptor gene TaPYL1-1B contributes to drought tolerance and grain yield by increasing water-use efficiency

Hude Mao et al.

Summary: Research shows that overexpressing the PYL gene TaPYL1-1B in wheat can lead to increased ABA sensitivity, photosynthetic capacity, and water-use efficiency, ultimately improving drought tolerance and yield. Candidate gene association analysis suggests that the favorable allele TaPYL1-1B(In-442) enhances expression of TaPYL1-1B in drought-tolerant genotypes, showing its potential as a valuable genetic target for developing drought-tolerant wheat germplasm.

A NAC transcription factor, TaNAC5D-2, acts as a positive regulator of drought tolerance through regulating water loss in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Jianhui Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, a drought-responsive NAC gene, TaNAC5D-2, was isolated and characterized in wheat. The results showed that TaNAC5D-2 functions as a positive regulator of drought tolerance through abscisic acid-mediated stomatal closure.

Climate Change Impact on Wheat Performance-Effects on Vigour, Plant Traits and Yield from Early and Late Drought Stress in Diverse Lines

Yuzhou Lan et al.

Summary: The study found that old Swedish wheat lines and wheat-rye introgressions had better early root vigor, while 3R genotypes had higher yield under early drought stress. Root biomass, grains, and spikes per plant were key factors for early drought tolerance, while 1000-grain weight and flag-leaf area were key factors for late drought tolerance.

The TOR-EIN2 axis mediates nuclear signalling to modulate plant growth

Liwen Fu et al.

Summary: The evolutionarily conserved TOR kinase acts as a master regulator coordinating cell proliferation and growth among eukaryotes. Research has shown that TOR directly phosphorylates EIN2 to regulate a wide range of genes involved in various metabolic pathways. This study reveals a molecular mechanism by which different signaling pathways can modulate a central signaling hub through distinct phosphorylation codes.
