Binding effects of antibiotic drug sulfamethazine on the serum albumins: Multi-spectroscopic and computation approach

Aben Ovung et al.

Summary: In recent decades, the study of bio-macromolecules-drug binding interactions has attracted great interest due to its various applications in drug modification and development. This study investigated the binding of the antibiotic drug Sulfamethazine to human serum albumin and bovine serum albumin using spectroscopic and computational techniques. The results showed potential binding affinity of the drug to the proteins through the formation of stable ground state complexes. The binding constants obtained were higher for human serum albumin than bovine serum albumin, and the binding interactions were driven by enthalpy and dominated by electrostatic and hydrophobic forces.

A Cytotoxic Bis(1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene)carbazolide Gold(III) Complex Targets DNA by Partial Intercalation

Danielle van der Westhuizen et al.

Summary: The synthesis of bis(triazolium)carbazole precursors and their complexes with coinage metals (Au, Ag) was reported. The gold complex showed higher cytotoxicity and selectivity towards breast cancer cells compared to the silver complex. Characterization techniques indicated that the gold complex may act as a partial DNA intercalator, exhibiting specific binding to DNA and redox stability in cells.

The palladacycle, BTC2, exhibits anti-breast cancer and breast cancer stem cell activity

Serah Kimani et al.

Summary: The study investigated the anti-cancer activity of a palladium complex, BTC2, in human breast cancer cells, demonstrating its selectivity, inhibition of cancer cell migration, and suppression of cancer stem cell activity. BTC2 also induced DNA double strand breaks, triggered cell cycle arrests, and activated multiple cell death pathways, showing promising anti-breast cancer activity both in vitro and in vivo.

Human versus Bovine Serum Albumin: A Subtle Difference in Hydrophobicity Leads to Large Differences in Bulk and Interface Behavior

Ralph Maier et al.

Summary: This study compared the phase behavior of human serum albumin (HSA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) in the presence of trivalent cations. It was found that HSA has stronger intermolecular attraction at the same compositions, leading to easier crystallization. Additionally, the higher surface hydrophobicity of HSA promotes directional and specific protein-protein contacts essential for protein crystallization.
