Research on the Non-Point Source Pollution Characteristics of Important Drinking Water Sources

Lei Hou et al.

Summary: The contamination of freshwater resources by non-point source pollution has become a significant issue in China. This study investigates the pollution sources and characteristics of non-point source total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in the Huangqian Reservoir watershed. The results show that the main sources of pollution are rural life and farmland, and the pollution is primarily concentrated in the water source protection area of the reservoir. The study suggests that controlling rural domestic sewage and waste is more effective than agricultural fertilizer control in improving water quality.

Unexpected nitrogen flow and water quality change due to varying atmospheric deposition

Shibo Chen et al.

Summary: Atmospheric deposition has a significant impact on the nutritional status and limitations of aquatic ecosystems. This study combines monitoring data and modeling to investigate the indirect nitrogen deposition and its varying impacts on tributary streams in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region of China. The findings highlight the importance of considering indirect N deposition in water quality management and the variation in nutrient limitation and plankton communities due to regional or global N deposition.

Spatiotemporal characteristics of nonpoint source nutrient loads and their impact on river water quality in Yancheng city, China, simulated by an improved export coefficient model coupled with grid-based runoff calculations

Pinzeng Rao et al.

Summary: Accurately quantifying the spatiotemporal nutrient loads from nonpoint sources is challenging due to the complex rainfall-runoff processes. This study improves the export coefficient model by considering the spatiotemporal distribution of the export coefficient and incorporates a grid-based rainfall-runoff module and land-use data. The results show that the improved model can simulate reasonable spatiotemporal variation in nutrient loads and provide insights on water pollution control.

Atmospheric nitrogen deposition and its environmental implications at a headwater catchment of Taihu Lake Basin, China

Jianwei Geng et al.

Summary: The study revealed a significant decrease in atmospheric nitrogen deposition at the headwater site, primarily due to a sharp decline in ammoniacal nitrogen deposition and relatively stable nitrate nitrogen deposition. This decline is beneficial in reducing nitrate nitrogen leaching in natural forest ecosystems. The long-term monitoring of atmospheric nitrogen deposition is crucial for developing emission control measures and safeguarding ecosystem health at a regional level.

Contribution of atmospheric N deposition to riverine N load in a forest-dominated watershed through field monitoring for three years

Ouping Deng et al.

Summary: The study found that nitrogen deposition significantly impacts riverine nitrogen load, with a higher contribution during crop production periods. The use of chemical fertilizer and manure, along with high precipitation, are assumed to be the main reasons for increased nitrogen deposition and riverine nitrogen load during crop production.

Risk assessment of non-point source pollution based on landscape pattern in the Hanjiang River basin, China

Yi-wen Liu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the risk of non-point source pollution in the Hanjiang River basin through landscape pattern analysis, showing generally high pollution risk throughout the watershed, with high-risk areas concentrated in the central, eastern, and western regions. Forest and grasslands in the southern and northern regions had low pollution risk, while source landscapes near water bodies had a significant impact on the environment.

Integrated assessment modeling reveals near-channel management as cost-effective to improve water in watersheds

Amy T. Hansen et al.

Summary: Despite decades of efforts to reduce nutrient and sediment export from agricultural fields, water quality in intensively managed agricultural landscapes remains highly degraded. Recent analysis shows that current conservation efforts are not enough to reverse water degradation, and a more integrated approach to water quality management is needed. Fluvial wetlands are found to be the most cost-effective management action to reduce nitrate and sediment loads, but interagency cooperation and watershed scale planning are necessary for substantial improvements in water quality.
