Inverse estimation of nonpoint source export coefficients for total nitrogen and total phosphorous in the Kako river basin

Valentina Pintos Andreoli et al.

Summary: Export coefficients for total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorous (TP) from different land uses in a major watershed in western Japan were estimated using a method that combines simulation tools and observed data at a single point. Multiple linear regression (MLR) models were developed to predict nutrient loads in the mainstream by combining results from a distributed runoff model with observed nutrient concentrations. The method was found to be effective in considering extreme climatic events and showed satisfactory results in estimating nutrient loads.

Short-term flood probability density forecasting using a conceptual hydrological model with machine learning techniques

Yanlai Zhou et al.

Summary: This study tackles the challenge of making accurate probability density forecasts of flood processes using machine learning techniques, proposing an integrated XAJ-MCQRNN model that combines conceptual hydrological models and neural networks. Through evaluation using streamflow and rainfall data, it is shown that the XAJ-MCQRNN model outperforms the benchmark MCQRNN model in terms of accuracy and reliability for multi-step ahead flood probability density forecasts. The new model achieves higher efficiency and improved coverage and bandwidth values in comparison to the benchmark model.

New framework for nonpoint source pollution management based on downscaling priority management areas

Lei Chen et al.

Summary: Scale transformation is crucial for NPS pollution management, improving the efficiency of PMAs identification. Uncertainties lie in the selection of water quality target, assessment point, and hydrological periods. The new framework shows advantages in reducing NPS control area and intensifying watershed management under different scenarios.

A review of non-point source water pollution modeling for the urban-rural transitional areas of China: Research status and prospect

Jingyuan Xue et al.

Summary: China has experienced rapid urbanization since the 1980s, leading to the transformation of traditional agricultural areas into urban-rural transitional areas. Nonpoint source pollution (NPSP) has become a significant issue in these areas, and research on the spatiotemporal variation in NPSP is crucial for improving water quality and guiding pollution control efforts. Modeling approaches can provide quantitative information and optimize management practices for NPSP control. However, existing NPSP models are not fully applicable to the unique characteristics of urban-rural transitional areas in terms of hydrological processes and pollutant differences.

Review of Nonpoint Source Pollution Models: Current Status and Future Direction

Mingjing Wang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the progress in the development of non-point source (NPS) models and proposes a systematic description of model framework, identifies common challenges, and summarizes future directions. The challenges include limitations in understanding specific NPS pollution processes, model expansion to different scales, data scarcity, prediction uncertainty, and insufficient accuracy for decision-making. The future directions for NPS model development include establishing a source-flow-sink framework, standardizing model input and parameter, and providing reliable decision support.

Improving the flood forecasting capability of the Xinanjiang model for small- and medium-sized ungauged catchments in South China

Junfu Gong et al.

Summary: This study applied the Xinanjiang model to small- and medium-sized ungauged catchments in southern China and compared the benefits of traditional regionalization methods with physically consistent parameter estimation methods. It was found that integrated schemes combining both methods performed considerably better than traditional regionalization methods, improving the transferability and prediction accuracy of the Xinanjiang model in these catchments. The study also highlighted the importance of considering the number of donor catchments in the integrated schemes for more effective flood event simulation.

Overview of water quality modeling

Mamuye Tebebal Ejigu

Summary: Water quality modeling plays a significant role in multiscale integrated water resources and environmental management, but faces challenges such as data requirements and model complexity. Model selection should take into account data availability, model complexity, type of waterbody, and modeling objectives.
