Changes in Mechanisms and Characteristics of Western US Floods Over the Last Sixty Years

Huilin Huang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the changes in flood frequency, magnitude, and timing caused by different flood generating mechanisms in the Western U.S. It finds a decrease in frequency and magnitude of rain-on-snow-driven floods, an increase in frequency and magnitude of convective-storm-driven floods, and an earlier occurrence of snowmelt-driven floods. Flood characteristics produced by other mechanisms remain generally stable.

Impacts of Summer Monsoons on flood characteristics in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: Monsoon has a significant impact on rainfall and flood characteristics in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin, modulating interannual variability in certain regions, advancing or delaying flood start dates, and affecting flood volume and flow. Different types of monsoon have varying effects on flood distribution in the basin.

Spatiotemporal variation of flash floods in the Hengduan Mountains region affected by rainfall properties and land use

Xiaoyun Sun et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of changes in precipitation and land use on spatiotemporal variation of flash floods in the Hengduan Mountains region of China. It found that the increase in flash flood events was closely correlated with the increased frequency and magnitude of heavy rainfall as well as the expansion of artificial surfaces. The study also revealed significant periodic variation in the occurrence of flash floods on various scales and identified a displacement of the center of gravity of flash flooding in the region.

Improvement of the SWAT Model for Snowmelt Runoff Simulation in Seasonal Snowmelt Area Using Remote Sensing Data

Hongling Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper presents the development and application of an improved temperature index method for the SWAT model in simulating daily snowmelt runoff in a seasonal snowmelt area. The improvements in the method result in significantly improved simulation results, supported by various metrics. The study also explores the impact of climate change on future snowmelt runoff and finds a decrease in snowmelt runoff under the given scenarios. This research provides valuable insights into the efficient development and utilization of water resources in seasonal snowmelt areas.

Flood inundation in the Lancang-Mekong River Basin: Assessing the role of summer monsoon

Jie Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different monsoon types and their combined effect on flood inundation characteristics in the Langcang-Mekong River Basin (LMRB). The results show that the monsoons and their combined effect overall have a positive impact on inundation frequency, depth, and area. The timing of inundation is usually advanced when the Western North Pacific Monsoon (WNPM) or the monsoon combined effect strengthens, but delayed when the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) strengthens.

Peng Yang et al.

Summary: The study on flood risk factors in the Yangtze River Basin during 2002-2018 showed significant correlations between climate indices and teleconnection indices, confirmed wet periods using Landsat data, and found linear relationships among major hydrological factors. Prediction of runoff based on these factors also showed promising results, laying a foundation for climate resilience and investments in the region.

Summary: The study found that floods are becoming more frequent and harder to control due to the lack of water conservancy projects in small and medium-sized basins, especially in developing regions. By analyzing observational data and using models, it was determined that physical geographic characteristics and rainfall play key roles in influencing flood characteristics.

A new era of flood control strategies from the perspective of managing the 2020 Yangtze River flood

Jun Xia et al.

Summary: The article highlights the importance of flood control of the Yangtze River in China's national water security, analyzing the changes in flood control strategies. It suggests that in the new era, the overall strategy for flood control of the Yangtze River should adhere to the principle of integration of storage and drainage throughout the whole basin, prioritizing downstream flood discharge using both engineering and non-engineering measures.

Investigation of inner-basin variation: Impact of large reservoirs on water regimes of downstream water bodies

Xue Dai et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of the Three Gorges Dam on interconnected water bodies downstream, focusing on the changes in flow alterations and river-lake interactions. Results suggest decreased water storage in tributary lakes after the dam's activation, leading to severe droughts and diminished ability to replenish the main river. The dam's impact on flow increase during dry season weakens downstream, while its effect on flow decrease during wet season exacerbates along the mainstream, especially downstream of lake outlets.

Regional Patterns and Physical Controls of Streamflow Generation Across the Conterminous United States

Summary: This study identifies regional patterns of dominant streamflow generation mechanisms across the conterminous United States by analyzing continuous rainfall-streamflow time series data. The study classifies catchments into eight classes based on six signatures and determines the climatic and physiographic controls on the dominant streamflow generation mechanisms. The study highlights climate aridity, median event rainfall volume, topographic slope, soil permeability, rock type, and vegetation density as the main controlling factors for streamflow generation mechanisms.
