Sharpening of cold-season storms over the western United States

Xiaodong Chen et al.

Summary: The spatial structures of large storms are not well understood in most climate models. Using high-resolution models, the authors demonstrate that winter storms become sharper under warming, with precipitation in the storm center increasing more than the storm area. Winter storms lead to significant economic losses in the western US. Ignoring storm sharpening could overestimate changes in design storms used in infrastructure planning.

The Relationship Between the Inner-Core Size and the Rainfall Distribution in Landfalling Tropical Cyclones Over China

Zifeng Yu et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the relationship between the radius of maximum wind (RMW) and rainfall in landfalling tropical cyclones (TCs) over China from 2001 to 2020. It finds that small TCs have higher rainrate and greater axisymmetry compared to large TCs. Small TCs also exhibit a 6-hour delayed decrease in rainfall near landfall, possibly due to their higher intensity.

Reduction in Precipitation Seasonality in China from 1960 to 2018

Y. U. N. A. MAO et al.

Summary: Changes in precipitation seasonality in China show an increasing trend from southeastern to northwestern regions, with decreased precipitation, later wet season start, and shorter wet season duration. The seasonality index in China has decreased from 1960 to 2018, particularly in climate-sensitive basins in northern China. El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) dominates the interannual fluctuations and spatial patterns of precipitation seasonality in China.

Event-Based Evaluation of the GPM Multisatellite Merged Precipitation Product From 2014 to 2018 Over China: Methods and Results

Runze Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of the Integrated MultisatellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) (IMERG) V06B product using hourly rain gauge data from approximately 50,000 stations in China. The results revealed biases in event properties of IMERG, which have important implications for applications like flood forecasting and storm identification. The study also indicated the necessity of considering event dynamics and stage information in satellite precipitation retrieval processes.

Two-decades of GPM IMERG early and final run products intercomparison: Similarity and difference in climatology, rates, and extremes

Zhi Li et al.

Summary: This study examines the similarities and differences between the two latest GPM IMERG products, ER and FR, across the globe. The results show that ER estimates higher annual rainfall than FR, with significant differences in instantaneous rates and extreme rainfall rates measurements. FR is more suitable for retrospective hydroclimatology and water resource applications, while ER shows potential utility for operational modeling of rainfall-triggered hazards despite not being bias-corrected by rain gauges.

Global precipitation system size

Yan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the global distribution of precipitation system size and its relationships with various precipitation parameters using data from 2015-2019. Results show that large precipitation systems are more common over oceans, while medium-sized systems dominate over most land areas. There are strong positive correlations between precipitation system size and precipitation amount, frequency, intensity, and duration, especially in tropical regions.

Recent global decrease in the inner-core rain rate of tropical cyclones

Shifei Tu et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the rainfall rate in the outer region of tropical cyclones has been increasing in the past twenty years, while it has significantly decreased in the inner-core region. Globally, the increase in TC rain rate is mainly attributed to the rising water vapor availability in the atmosphere.

Majid Kazemzadeh et al.

Summary: The study developed a new model to detect trends in satellite precipitation data, finding that 12.3% of pixel-based precipitation time series show significant trends, with a dominance of linear trends across continents. Decreasing trends cover larger areas than increasing trends except in Asia, and linear trends dominate in warm temperate and equatorial climates.

Global increase in tropical cyclone rain rate

Oscar Guzman et al.

Summary: The study reveals that tropical cyclone rainfall rates have increased by 1.3% per year between 1998 and 2018, driven mainly by stronger rainfall in the outer-core region. The increasing trend is more pronounced in the Northwestern Pacific and North Atlantic and is associated with increases in sea surface temperature and total precipitable water in the tropical cyclone environment.
