Revisiting the role of transpiration in the variation of ecosystem water use efficiency in China

Huaiwei Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that the variability of water use efficiency (WUE) in ecosystems is mainly influenced by transpiration (T) under drought conditions. Vegetation in arid areas tends to adapt to drought by increasing their WUE. The role of gross primary productivity (GPP) and evapotranspiration (ET) jointly dominate WUE variability in semi-arid/arid areas.

Assessment of long-term water stress for ecosystems across China using the maximum entropy production theory-based evapotranspiration product

Huaiwei Sun et al.

Summary: The study investigates long-term water stress in ecosystems and regions across China using the improved maximum entropy production (MEP) method. Four water stress indices were constructed based on the MEP and other models. The results show that all ecosystems in China are at a high risk of water stress, with different levels of stress among different ecosystems. Provinces in the northern regions, such as Xinjiang, Qinghai, Inner Mongolia, and Gansu, display the highest water stress. The study highlights the importance of improving water use efficiency and optimizing water resource management to alleviate water stress on a large scale.

An R package of maximum entropy production model to estimate 41 years of global evapotranspiration

Yong Yang et al.

Summary: An accurate estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) is crucial for understanding the global hydrological cycle. The maximum entropy production (MEP) model provides a novel approach for modeling ET using parsimonious inputs and energy conservation. In this study, the RMEP package was developed to implement the MEP model, and a global ET analysis was conducted using inputs from GLDAS and GLASS products. The results showed a close agreement between MEP-estimated ET and EC measurements, with higher accuracy observed for forestlands, wetlands, and cropland land covers. The MEP model provided an accurate ET estimate and can serve as a global analytical method for the hydrological cycle and climate change.

Nonparametric Approach to Copula Estimation in Compounding The Joint Impact of Storm Surge and Rainfall Events in Coastal Flood Analysis

Shahid Latif et al.

Summary: The joint probability modelling of storm surges and rainfall events in low-lying coastal areas is crucial for assessing compound flood risk. This study proposes a nonparametric approach using the Bernstein copula estimator and Beta kernel copula density. The research shows that neglecting the compound effect of storm surge and rainfall in coastal flood risk assessment may lead to underestimated failure probability statistics.
