Updated site concordance factors minimize effects of homoplasy and taxon sampling

Yu K. Mo et al.

Summary: In this study, a new method for calculating site concordance factors (sCFs) is introduced. The updated version uses likelihood to generate probability distributions of ancestral states at internal nodes, thus reducing the effects of homoplasy and taxon sampling.

The complete sequence of a human genome

Sergey Nurk et al.

Summary: The Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) Consortium has presented a complete sequence of a human genome, T2T-CHM13, which covers the whole genome except for the Y chromosome. This new sequence includes gapless assemblies, error corrections in previous references, and nearly 200 million base pairs of additional sequence with gene predictions, including protein coding genes. The completion of important regions allows for further studies on genetic variations and functions.

The changing face of genome assemblies: Guidance on achieving high-quality reference genomes

Annabel Whibley et al.

Summary: The quality of genome assemblies has improved rapidly in recent years due to advances in sequencing technology, assembly approaches, and quality control. Exceptional quality genome assemblies have become important resources for ecological, conservation, evolutionary, and population genomics studies. Recommendations include using long-read sequencing, incorporating scaffolding approaches, and carefully evaluating genome assemblies.

Evolutionary history of Carnivora (Mammalia, Laurasiatheria) inferred from mitochondrial genomes

Alexandre Hassanin et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the complete mitochondrial genomes of various species within the order Carnivora to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships and estimate divergence times. The findings provide insights into the evolutionary history of different species within the order, revealing that the emergence and diversification of crown carnivorans occurred millions of years ago, with differences in evolution times between the Caniformia and Feliformia groups.
