Biodegradability of polyethylene by efficient bacteria from the guts of plastic-eating waxworms and investigation of its degradation mechanism

Sameh Samir Ali et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of gut symbionts of lesser waxworm larvae to degrade low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Two bacterial isolates, identified as Citrobacter freundii and Bacillus sp., showed the highest reduction in LDPE's tensile strength. The cell density of these bacteria increased over time, indicating their high activity in degrading LDPE. These findings provide promising evidence for the biodegradation of plastic waste management in the environment.

A review on role of process parameters on pyrolysis of biomass and plastics: Present scope and future opportunities in conventional and microwave-assisted pyrolysis technologies

Dadi Suriapparao et al.

Summary: Pyrolysis is a thermochemical conversion platform that converts biomass and plastics into value-added products. This review focuses on understanding the role of different parameters, such as feedstock composition, heating rate, reaction temperature, residence time, feedstock particle size, and type of pyrolysis reactor. It also analyzes the upgradation of bio-oil using physical and catalytic approaches, as well as the synergistic effects of co-pyrolysis and catalytic co-pyrolysis. The review discusses the use of microwave heating and the role of metal oxide and zeolite catalysts in hydrocarbon and oxygenate formation. Future promising approaches include pyrolysis-combustion combination, microwave hybrid heating, and continuous catalytic co-pyrolysis. This review fills the research gap in understanding pyrolysis process parameters and waste valorization using microwave-assisted pyrolysis, co-pyrolysis, and catalytic co-pyrolysis technologies. It also provides insights into the effective utilization of biomass and plastic waste.

Microbial biodegradation of plastics: Challenges, opportunities, and a critical perspective

Shilpa et al.

Summary: The abundance of synthetic polymers in the environment has increased due to uncontrolled utilization and disposal, leading to concerns about accumulation and saturation. Plastic pollution has risen exponentially during the COVID-19 pandemic, primarily due to single-use plastics such as PPE kits, gloves, and face masks. Physicochemical methods for degrading synthetic polymers have limited efficiency and produce hazardous by-products. However, microbial species isolated from landfills and dumpsites have shown promise in utilizing plastics as a carbon source, energy, and biomass production. Microbial biodegradation approaches offer a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution to the plastic waste problem, with the potential to be combined with physicochemical methods for optimal results.
