Kinetics of leaching: a review

Fariborz Faraji et al.

Summary: Kinetics plays a crucial role in leaching processes, but there is currently no clear pathway for investigating the kinetics of leaching. In this review, the main mathematical models of leaching and all possible scenarios are presented and discussed. The effect of various leaching parameters on the rate of dissolution is summarized, and two main approaches of rate determination are described and compared. Techniques for detecting changes in the leaching controlling mechanism are introduced, and additional models and equations are suggested for cases where there is no agreement between data and conventional models. The importance of considering various possible mechanisms in the kinetics of leaching is emphasized.

Insights into the polysaccharides and proteins production from Penicillium citrinum during bioleaching of spent coin cells

Tannaz Naseri et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of proteins and polysaccharides in the bioleaching of spent coin cells (SCCs). The results showed that both proteins and polysaccharides play an important role in the bioleaching process, with proteins mainly concentrated in tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) and polysaccharides in loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS). The binding rate of Mn and Li to EPS was positively correlated with the protein and polysaccharide content, and the principal functional groups involved in Mn and Li binding were O-H and carboxyl.

A novel green strategy for biorecovery of valuable elements along with enrichment of rare earth elements from activated spent automotive catalysts using fungal metabolites

Nazanin Bahaloo-Horeh et al.

Summary: This study proposed a novel green strategy for treating spent automotive catalytic converters by using oxalic acid-enriched spent culture medium from Aspergillus niger cultivations. By optimizing the production of oxalic acid and utilizing fungal metabolites for metal recovery, efficient metal recovery from SACCs and enrichment of rare earth elements (REEs) were achieved.

Chemical and Microbial Leaching of Valuable Metals from PCBs and Tantalum Capacitors of Spent Mobile Phones

Asma Sikander et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficiency of chemical and microbial leaching for multi-metal extraction from printed circuit boards (PCBs) and tantalum capacitor scrap. The results showed that sulfuric acid achieved 100% extraction efficiency for Cu and high extraction efficiency for other metals under optimal conditions. The mixed consortium of acidophiles successfully mobilized Ni and Cu, but had lower specificity for tantalum and precious metals. These findings have implications for the further processing strategies of waste electronic and electrical equipment (WEEE).
