Mitigation effects of selenium on accumulation of cadmium and morpho-physiological properties in rice varieties

Muhammad Umer Farooq et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop an agronomic plan for biofortification of rice with selenium and reclamation of cadmium-contaminated soil, utilizing sodium selenite and cadmium chloride as soil treatments. It was found that application of 1 mg/kg selenite decreased cadmium content and increased chlorophyll content and photosynthetic activity. However, exposure to elevated cadmium stress may result in over-accumulation of selenium in rice, posing health risks.

Selenium alleviates toxicity in Amaranthus hypochondriacus by modulating the synthesis of thiol compounds and the subcellular distribution of cadmium

Li Yang et al.

Summary: The effects of selenium (Se) on the Cd hyperaccumulator plant Amaranthus hypochondriacus (K472) were investigated. Se increased antioxidant enzyme activities, reduced Cd concentrations and toxicity, restored cell viability, and enhanced photosynthesis. Se promoted the synthesis and transport of metallothioneins (PC) to chelate Cd and protected organelles. While the Cd content in K472 decreased, the total extracted Cd concentrations and remediation efficiency were maintained by Se. These findings provide insights and methods for mitigating Cd toxicity and expanding the engineering application of K472.

Role of nodes in accumulation and distribution of cadmium and its relationship with nutrient distribution and photosynthesis in the growth and regrowth of Brachiaria decumbens

Flavio Henrique Silveira Rabelo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the accumulation and distribution of cadmium (Cd) in graminaeous-like rice and found that basal nodes restricted the upward transportation of Cd in the initial growth period, but Cd reached the upper nodes in the regrowth period. Although Cd absorption by the basal node induced nutritional disorders, it had only a minimal effect on photosynthesis. The nodes of Brachiaria decumbens allowed for Cd accumulation in the lower parts of the plant, avoiding nutritional disorders and photosynthesis impairment.

Selenium improved the combined remediation efficiency of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and ryegrass on cadmium-nonylphenol co-contaminated soil

Gang Ni et al.

Summary: The application of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and selenium in soil can enhance the plant remediation efficiency of ryegrass on contaminated soil, reducing the removal rates of NP and Cd. The changes in the microbial community in soil caused by the application of P. aeruginosa and Se promote the enrichment of beneficial bacteria and enhance the removal of NP and Cd.

Effects of soil moisture on aging of exogenous selenate in three different soils and mechanisms

Hui Zhai et al.

Summary: Soil moisture has a significant impact on the aging of selenium in soil, with saturated conditions accelerating the aging process by reducing the soluble selenium fractions. The types of soil and moisture levels also play a role in the transformation of selenium species. Understanding these factors can provide insights for effective water management strategies in selenium biofortification practices.
