Environmental and human health risk assessment of sulfidic mine waste: Bioaccessibility, leaching and mineralogy

Jillian Helser et al.

Summary: The study revealed that sulfidic mine waste contains high levels of metal(loid)s and key minerals, with varying orally bioaccessible fractions. Human health risk assessment indicated carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for most samples. Leaching tests showed high mobility of metal(loid)s, especially Pb, posing potential environmental risks. Sequential extractions coupled with mineralogical analyses highlighted the highly mobile levels of Cd, Pb and Zn, posing environmental and health risks.

Emergent thallium exposure from uranium mill tailings

Meiling Yin et al.

Summary: This study provides novel insights into the characteristics and mechanisms of thallium release from uranium mill tailings (UMT), highlighting the importance of particle size effects and surface dissolution in controlling thallium release. Long-term leaching and weathering can lead to an increase in acid extractable and oxidizable fractions of thallium in UMT.

The detoxification and utilization of cyanide tailings: A critical review

Kaiwei Dong et al.

Summary: Cyanide tailings are hazardous solid wastes generated from the gold mining industry, containing toxic cyanides and valuable elements. Efforts have been made to develop detoxification and utilization technologies, with thermal treatment and autoclaved hydrolysis showing promise for cyanide removal. Recovery of valuable elements from cyanide tailings faces challenges but can bring economic and environmental benefits.
