Quantifying Indirect Contribution from Precursors to Human Body Burden of Legacy PFASs Based on Paired Blood and One-Week Duplicate Diet

Xin Chen et al.

Summary: The restriction on legacy PFASs has led to increased use and contamination of their precursors and novel alternatives. This study measured 24 PFASs in human blood, urine, and exposure matrices, and found that 6:2 Cl-PFESA was a significant contributor. It was estimated that about 19% of PFOS in humans was from its precursors, suggesting indirect exposure may play a role in PFAS contamination.

Ultra-Short-Chain PFASs in the Sources of German Drinking Water: Prevalent, Overlooked, Difficult to Remove, and Unregulated

Isabelle J. Neuwald et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been the focus of environmental chemistry and chemical regulation. This study analyzed short-chain and ultra-short-chain PFASs in German drinking water and found that ultra-short-chain PFASs were widely present and had the highest concentrations. Traditional PFAS contamination detection methods did not capture these ultra-short-chain PFASs.

Passive sampling of toluene (and benzene) in indoor air using a semipermeable membrane device

Aline D. Goncalves et al.

Summary: The distribution and concentration of organic compounds in the environment have attracted great interest. Factors such as urbanization, population growth, and new technologies contribute to the increase in pollutant emissions, especially volatile organic compounds (VOCs). A semipermeable membrane device (SPMD) was developed for passive sampling of toluene and benzene in gas phase, which proved effective in identifying the analytes in indoor air.

Summary: This study demonstrated the utility of a hard ionization source (ICP-MS/MS) as a fluorine-specific detector in combination with ESI-MS for the identification of fluorine-containing compounds. The simultaneous hyphenation of HPLC-ICP-MS/MS with HR-ESI-MS was used to evaluate biodegradation products of organofluorine compounds by sewage sludge.

Fluorinated Compounds in North American Cosmetics

Heather D. Whitehead et al.

Summary: This study found high concentrations of PFAS in cosmetics purchased in the United States and Canada, with most products' ingredient lists not disclosing the presence of these chemicals. This exposes a gap in labeling laws in both countries and raises concerns about potential health and ecological harms in the manufacturing, use, and disposal of cosmetics containing PFAS.
