Encapsulation of iron nanoparticles with magnesium hydroxide shell for remarkable removal of ciprofloxacin from contaminated water

Omar Falyouna et al.

Summary: The study for the first time proposed the use of Mg/Fe0 for ciprofloxacin removal from water, achieving high removal efficiency under optimized conditions. The treatment system showed excellent performance over a wide pH range and demonstrated both physisorption and chemisorption mechanisms for ciprofloxacin removal, with thermodynamic analysis indicating an exothermic and spontaneous process.

Occurrence of antibiotics in wastewater from hospital and convectional wastewater treatment plants and their impact on the effluent receiving rivers: current knowledge between 2010 and 2019

Loveth Oke Omuferen et al.

Summary: The increased consumption of antibiotics worldwide has raised concerns as their presence in wastewater treatment plants' effluent poses a threat to public health. This review examines the presence, concentrations, and types of antibiotics in various waste treatment plants, natural water bodies, and hospital wastewaters over the past 10 years. The most frequently detected antibiotics are sulfonamides, followed by macrolides, trimethoprim, quinolones, and tetracyclines. Future research on the development of more effective technologies for antibiotic removal is recommended.

Hydrogen atom abstraction mechanism for organic compound oxidation by acetylperoxyl radical in Co(II)/peracetic acid activation system

Penghui Du et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the reaction mechanism of the acetylperoxyl radical (CH3CO3 center dot)-driven oxidation of phenol. The results showed that hydrogen atom abstraction (HAA) is the most favorable route in the initial step of CH3CO3 center dot-driven phenol oxidation. The generated phenoxy radicals further undergo dimerization or react with CH3CO3 center dot to produce different products.

Manganese oxides activated peroxymonosulfate for ciprofloxacin removal: Effect of oxygen vacancies and chemical states

Yuan Chi et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that Ciprofloxacin, an anti-inflammatory drug, could be effectively degraded by sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes with manganese oxides. Among the different manganese oxides tested, MnO showed better catalytic activity, and O-1(2) was identified as the dominant species during the reaction.

Muhammad Zaheer Afzal et al.

Summary: A novel hydrogel beads with dual roles of adsorbent and sonocatalyst were prepared and found to be effective for the removal of antibiotics from water. The hydrogel beads exhibited higher degradation efficiency in acidic media and could maintain high efficiency through regeneration process.

Efficient photocatalytic degradation of emerging ciprofloxacin under visible light irradiation using BiOBr/carbon quantum dot/ saponite composite

Chitiphon Chuaicham et al.

Summary: The use of BiOBr/carbon quantum dot/saponite composites in photocatalytic wastewater remediation was investigated in this study. The results showed that the strong adhesion between CQDs and clay in the composites improved the interaction between BiOBr and CQDs, leading to enhanced photocatalytic performance. The optimized CQDs/Clay@BiOBr composite exhibited a faster degradation rate and better separation and transportation of photogenerated electrons and holes. The proposed composite has potential application as a visible-light-driven photocatalyst for organic contaminant decomposition in wastewater.

Marjan Salari et al.

Summary: This study aims to model and optimize the Fenton-like process for antibiotics removal. Different experimental designs and artificial neural networks are compared to find the optimal conditions. Multi-objective optimization using genetic algorithms reveals that Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm-II performs better. The TOPSIS method is applied to select the best alternative.

Mechanistic Insight into the Reactivities of Aqueous-Phase Singlet Oxygen with Organic Compounds

Benjamin Barrios et al.

Summary: Singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) is a reactive oxygen species that plays a key role in various environments. This study uses density functional theory calculations to determine reaction mechanisms with different organic compounds and discusses the dominant reaction mechanisms for each group. Theoretical calculations and experimental data are compared to establish linear free-energy relationships and correlations with electron density parameters.
