Understanding adsorption and biodegradation in granular activated carbon for drinking water treatment: A critical review

Jie Yuan et al.

Summary: This review summarizes and critically discusses the experimental and modeling approaches and results used to distinguish between the role of adsorption and biodegradation in granular activated carbon (GAC). Several limitations are identified, and four new approaches are proposed to overcome these limitations.

Adsorption of fulvic acid on mesopore-rich activated carbon with high surface area

Min Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, a mesopore-rich activated carbon (KAC) with high surface area was used as an adsorbent to investigate the adsorption of fulvic acid (FA). The results showed that KAC exhibited better adsorption capacity for FA compared to previous studies on biochars (BCs) and activated carbons (ACs), and the negative pH effect on adsorption performance was also weaker. Additionally, KAC was capable of adsorbing FA fractions with various molecular weights, higher aromaticity, and higher polarity.

Multi-site nanocomposite sorbent for simultaneous removal of diverse micropollutants from treated wastewater

Ofri B. Zusman et al.

Summary: The research thoroughly investigated the adsorption mechanism of three chemically-diverse micropollutants on CPN, showing that both anionic and cationic exchange sites coexist on the CPN and can adsorb simultaneously without compromising each other. The adsorption of non-ionic micropollutants was enhanced in the presence of charged micropollutants due to a synergistic effect. The study also demonstrated the efficient filtration of effluent organic matter and micropollutants from TWW by CPN columns compared to granular activated carbon columns.

Bacterial community change and antibiotic resistance promotion after exposure to sulfadiazine and the role of UV/H2O2-GAC treatment

Lixin Huo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of sulfadiazine on bacterial community and antibiotic resistance genes in drinking water distribution systems. Addition of sulfadiazine to sand filtered water increased bacterial activity and extracellular polymeric substances production, promoting biofilm formation and enhancing bacterial resistance to chlorine. However, UV/H2O2-GAC filtration efficiently removed sulfadiazine, resulting in minimal changes in bacterial community and ARGs promotion.

Enhanced Reactive Red 2 anaerobic degradation through improving electron transfer efficiency by nano-Fe3O4 modified granular activated carbon

Hongyou Wan et al.

Summary: The study found that the addition of NFGAC can effectively promote the anaerobic digestion of azo dye RR2 wastewater, increasing organic matter removal and methane production. Analysis showed that the addition of NFGAC can improve the electron transfer system (ETS) activity during RR2 anaerobic digestion, with a possible mechanism being the increase in functional groups to enhance electron accepting and donating capacities.

Bacterial community structure and putative nitrogen-cycling functional traits along a charosphere gradient under waterlogged conditions

Mengjie Yu et al.

Summary: The unique spatial niches created by biochar form a dynamic biogeochemical soil zone known as the charosphere. This zone has different properties from regular soil or biochar, and can act as a hotspot for microbial activity. The effects of charosphere on soil processes and microbial communities are still unclear, but the study showed that different types of biochar can have varying impacts on bacterial diversity and composition. The spatial distribution of functional genes and genera within the charosphere gradient highlights the importance of heterogeneity in understanding how biochar can reduce nitrogen losses in agroecosystems.

Deprotonation and aggregation of Al-13 under alkaline titration: A simulating study related to coagulation process

Guangyu An et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the deprotonation and aggregation processes of Al-13 in polyaluminum chloride, revealing that the aggregation process can stabilize the polycations and particles can promote the aggregation of Al-13. The findings suggest that strong and compact flocs can be generated through in situ aggregation of Al-13, providing insight for the development of new efficient coagulants for various water qualities.

Mechanism involved in the treatment of sulfamethoxazole in wastewater using a constructed wetland microbial fuel cell system

Meixue Dai et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the constructed wetland microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) showed higher removal efficiencies for sulfamethoxazole compared to the constructed wetland (CW), indicating its stability and effectiveness in the presence of the antibiotic. The higher power generation performance of the CW-MFC also highlighted its potential for wastewater treatment. Moreover, the findings suggested that the CW-MFC could be a promising technique for mitigating sulfamethoxazole contamination in wastewater, offering environmental and economic benefits over traditional methods.
