Photoactive polymer membranes for degradation of pharmaceuticals from water

Julia Becker-Jahn et al.

Summary: By immobilizing two different photosensitizer molecules on a commercial polyethersulfone membrane using electron beam-mediated grafting, highly active membrane surfaces capable of generating singlet oxygen upon light activation were created. These photoactive membranes were able to efficiently degrade pharmaceuticals like propranolol and ranitidine, converting them into transformation products with high singlet oxygen generation activity. The immobilization process enhanced surface hydrophilicity and permeance while maintaining pore size and morphology, leading to effective degradation of the pharmaceuticals.

Peroxydisulfate activation by photo-generated charges on mesoporous carbon nitride for removal of chlorophenols

Guimin Liu et al.

Summary: Photogenerated charges are involved in activating peroxydisulfate (PDS) on mesoporous carbon nitride (MCN) with Lewis basic sites under visible light irradiation, producing important active species for the removal of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP). The Lewis basic sites of MCN induce PDS interface hydrolysis, generating hydroperoxyl anions and peroxide ions that react with photogenerated holes to produce superoxide radicals and singlet oxygen. The separated electrons are responsible for attacking the C-Cl bond of TCP, with a lower electrical energy per order for vis/MCN/PDS compared to UV/PDS.

Simple and efficient method for functionalizing photocatalytic ceramic membranes and assessment of its applicability for wastewater treatment in up-scalable membrane reactors

Siwada Deepracha et al.

Summary: A photocatalytically active layer composed of TiO2 (Evonik P25) was successfully deposited on the macroporous permeate side of an asymmetric porous alumina membrane with the aid of a smectite (a synthetic hectorite, Sumecton SWF). The coated hybrid was applied for the photocatalytic decomposition of organics in water without significantly affecting the water permeance of the membranes. The implementation of a photocatalytic membrane reactor shows potential for continuous treatment of polluted waters by easily up-scaling the system with larger membrane modules.
