Insights into potassium permanganate reducing H2S generation from anaerobic fermentation of sludge

Qizi Fu et al.

Summary: Potassium permanganate, a versatile strong oxidant, has been used as an effective additive for degrading pollutants and recovering resources from waste activated sludge. Research has shown that KMnO4 significantly reduces H2S production during anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge. Furthermore, addition of KMnO4 inhibits the activities of sulfate reducing bacteria and other anaerobes responsible for sulfur-containing organics hydrolysis, leading to a reduction in sulfur-based precipitations and an increase in fermentation pH which benefits the chemical equilibrium of sulfide species.

Comprehensively understanding metabolic pathways of protein during the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Siyuan Wang et al.

Summary: The metabolic pathways of protein during anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge were comprehensively investigated. The results showed the involvement of 100 types of peptidases in the hydrolysis and acidogenesis processes. Serine endopeptidases and serine-type carboxypeptidases were identified as key enzymes. The study also identified critical metabolic pathways for amino acids, which could contribute to improving the performance of anaerobic digestion.

Dynamic Evolution and Covariant Response Mechanism of Volatile Organic Compounds and Residual Functional Groups during the Online Pyrolysis of Coal and Biomass Fuels

Fanhao Song et al.

Summary: This study proposes a covariant evolution mechanism to explain the emission characteristics of VOCs and RFGs during biomass pyrolysis. Using online measurement and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, it is found that the relative percentages of CS/WP-VOCs are higher than those of SBC-VOCs, and VOCs tend to have smaller carbon skeletons as the carbon oxidation state increases. The study also reveals a corresponding relationship between the sequential responses of VOCs and RFGs during CS/WP pyrolysis. Compared to CS/WP, the gas-solid products from SBC pyrolysis exhibit complex temperature-dependent responses and high oxidation-induced variability.

Rhamnolipid increases H2S generation from waste activated sludge anaerobic fermentation: An overlooked concern

Qizi Fu et al.

Summary: This study found that Rhamnolipid (RL) promotes the generation of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) by reducing surface tension, altering the structure of sulfotransferases, and increasing the expression of key genes involved in dissimilatory sulfate reduction.

How Does Chitosan Affect Methane Production in Anaerobic Digestion?

Xuran Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that chitosan in sewage sludge anaerobic digestion could inhibit methane production by restricting the transfer of organic substrates and reducing microbial activities. Chitosan also suppressed the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances and increased mass transfer resistance, leading to a lower metabolic rate of anaerobes.

Revealing how the entering nano-titanium dioxide in wastewater worsened sludge dewaterability

Longhu Yuan et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comparative analysis on sludge samples from laboratory reactors and found that TiO2 NPs have a significant impact on the dewatering performance of sludge. The mechanism analysis revealed that TiO2 NPs trigger reactive oxygen species, induce cellular stress, decrease ATP generation, and lead to changes in microbial community, all of which contribute to the deterioration of sludge dewatering.

An integrated strategy to enhance performance of anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Angelica Guerrero Calderon et al.

Summary: The study introduced a new pretreatment method using ferric chloride and nitrite to enhance anaerobic digestion of thickened waste activated sludge, resulting in improved degradability, methane yield, digestate disposal, and phosphorus recovery. The dosing of FeCl3 reduced the pH of the sludge and led to the formation of free nitrous acid, which significantly increased methane production and reduced polymer requirements for further digestate dewatering. Additionally, the dosed Fe(III) precipitated sulfide and phosphorus, decreasing hydrogen sulfide concentration in biogas and increasing vivianite content in digested sludge.
