Short-term stress of quaternary ammonium compounds on intracellular and extracellular resistance genes in denitrification systems

Mingyan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the short-term stress of high concentrations of QACs in wastewater on denitrification. The results showed that QACs inhibited nitrate removal and affected denitrification performance. The abundance of bacteria and spread patterns of resistance genes were also impacted by QACs, leading to disruptions in the wastewater treatment process.

The responses of activated sludge to membrane cleaning reagent H2O2 and protection of extracellular polymeric substances

Bei Jiang et al.

Summary: Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is being considered as a potential alternative to chlorine for controlling biofouling in membrane bioreactors (MBRs), however its use may lead to inhibition of key enzymes, decreased degradation efficiency, and increased cell damage for microorganisms, especially during membrane cleaning processes. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were found to moderate the adverse impacts on microbes by inhibiting key enzyme activity, reducing phenol degradation efficiency, and enhancing cell damage with H2O2 concentration increased.EPS also protected microorganisms by sacrificial reaction with H2O2, as indicated by spectroscopic characterization.

Zhiyuan Kong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism of enhanced power generation and nitrogen removal in an ANAMMOXMFC reactor through subsequent acetate addition. The results showed that synchronous and efficient nitrogen removal and power generation were achieved after the addition of acetate. Additionally, the bacterial community also exhibited distinct changes.

Fates of quaternary ammonium compound resistance genes and the corresponding resistant strain in partial nitrification/anammox system under pressure of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride

Dingchang Li et al.

Summary: This study revealed the long-term microbiological responses of the partial nitrification/anammox (PN/A) system to hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (ATMAC-C16). The system showed tolerance to ATMAC-C16 and enriched specific anammox bacteria under the pressure. ATMAC-C16 decreased the relative abundance of most antibiotics resistance genes but significantly enriched QACs resistance genes. The resistance strain Pseudoxanthomonas mexicana was identified and its resistance might be due to the qacH gene and its own efflux pump system.

Molecular mechanism of antibiotic resistance induced by mono- and twin-chained quaternary ammonium compounds

Yin Jia et al.

Summary: The usage of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) as disinfectants has increased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic, potentially leading to accelerated antibiotic resistance. Long-term exposure to subinhibitory level QACs can lead to multidrug resistance, but the role of mutagenesis in resistance evolution is not clear. This study found that E. coli adapted differently to benzalkonium chloride (BAC) and didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC), with DDAC exposure resulting in higher antibiotic resistance and more mutations. The mutations induced by QACs potentially contributed to high multi-drug resistance. The reversible and irreversible phenotypic resistance induced by subinhibitory and inhibitory concentrations of QACs, respectively, highlight the importance of understanding the mechanisms and risks of different QACs in the environment.

Linear anionic surfactant (SDBS) destabilized anammox process through sludge disaggregation and metabolic inhibition

Zheng-Zhe Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that increasing the concentration of SDBS in the reactor can promote the release of extracellular microbial products from anammox granules and the wash-out of anammox population, affecting reactor performance to some extent. However, functional redundancy in the reactor helps to maintain stable performance despite sludge disaggregation. Furthermore, as the SDBS concentration increases, the metabolic activity of anammox biomass significantly decreases, possibly due to cell membrane damage causing intracellular matrix leakage.

Active DNRA and denitrification in oxic hypereutrophic waters

Elias Broman et al.

Summary: Since the introduction of synthetic fertilizers over a hundred years ago, coastal oceans have faced increasing nutrient loading, resulting in eutrophication and extensive algal blooms. Studies show that in a large hypereutrophic lagoon, both dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) and denitrification processes are active, with DNRA playing a crucial role in recycling fixed nitrogen in the ecosystem.

Responses of aerobic granular sludge to fluoroquinolones: Microbial community variations, and antibiotic resistance genes

Yi-Jing Shi et al.

Summary: This study found that under high levels of ammonium, aerobic granular sludge (AGS) showed good removal efficiency for three fluoroquinolones (FQs), with ciprofloxacin (CFX) and norfloxacin (NFX) being more effectively removed. Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) related to FQs tended to exist in denitrifying bacteria, indicating a preference for denitrifiers in the distribution of these elements.
