Evolution of surface roughness of single sand grains with normal loading

Ting Yao et al.

Summary: The surface roughness of soil grains plays a significant role in the friction angle and stiffness of soil. This study investigates the evolution of surface roughness of natural sand grains under increasing normal load. It is found that the plastic deformation of asperities and bulk of sand grains affect the surface roughness. As the normal load increases, the surface roughness decreases initially and then tends to remain constant.

Stress state and noncoaxiality of Leighton Buzzard sand in NGI-type bi-directional simple shear tests

Yao Li et al.

Summary: The study found that the stress state obtained by the two methods shows good agreement, especially under simple initial stress conditions. However, due to the underestimation of the constant k, the minor principle stress and horizontal stress interpreted by the empirical method are higher than that in DEM test, while the noncoaxiality interpreted by the empirical method is lower than that in the DEM test.

Thermal Conductivity of Sand-Silt Mixtures

Shahrzad Roshankhah et al.

Summary: Heat flow plays a crucial role in the design and operation of various engineered geosystems. This study investigates the evolution of thermal conductivity of soil mixtures under different stress conditions and highlights the impact of thermal contact resistance on granular materials. The results show that the thermal conductivity of soils varies with stress state, density, mineralogy, and pore fluid properties, with water-saturated soils having significantly higher thermal conductivity compared to air-dry soils.

Forecasting the long-term deterioration of a cut slope in high-plasticity clay using a numerical model

H. Postill et al.

Summary: This paper details the development of a numerical modelling approach to forecast the long-term performance of a cut slope in high plasticity clay. It investigates the influence of construction-induced pore water pressure dissipation and seasonal weather-driven pore water pressure cycles on slope deterioration, which ultimately leads to shallow first-time progressive failure. The study demonstrates that the long-term deterioration in slope performance is governed by hydrological processes in the weathered near surface soil zone formed following slope excavation.
