Sorption isotherms and moisture transfer properties of seven Central Africa hardwood species

Sahbi Ouertani et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to characterize the wood-water relationship and moisture transfer properties of Central African species with limited available data in the literature. Moisture sorption isotherms were determined using the Dynamic Vapor Sorption method, and the water vapor diffusion coefficient and gas permeability were measured using the cup method. The results provide valuable information on the wood-water interaction and moisture transfer for these species.

Physicochemical properties, microbial loads and shelf life prediction of solar dried mango (Mangifera indica) and pineapple (Ananas comosus) in Tanzania

Richard John Mongi

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of solar drying techniques on the physicochemical properties, microbial loads, and shelf life of dried mango and pineapple. The results showed that tunnel-dried samples had better quality and longer shelf life compared to cabinet-dried samples, with lower microbial loads. Therefore, the application of solar drying for fruit preservation is recommended, along with further research to establish optimal drying and storage conditions to reduce fungal loads.

The Response of Vegetable Sweet Potato (Ipomoea batatas Lam) Nodes to Different Concentrations of Encapsulation Agent and MS Salts

Shehu A. Tadda et al.

Summary: Encapsulation of in vitro derived vegetable sweet potato nodal segments with sodium alginate, calcium chloride, and Murashige and Skoog salts resulted in uniform spherical beads that were suitable for propagation. The plantlets grown with 1/2 MS salts had the shortest days to shoot and root emergence, longer shoots, highest conversion rate, and least leaf abscission, making them excellent material for micropropagation and germplasm conservation.

Drying kinetics of two fruits Portuguese cultivars (Bravo de Esmolfe apple and Madeira banana): An experimental study

M. N. Coelho Pinheiro et al.

Summary: Air convective dehydration experiments were conducted on two fruits: Bravo de Esmolfe apple from Beiras province and Cavendish banana from Madeira Island. The drying behavior of the fruits was analyzed, and it was found that there are different drying rate stages for apples compared to bananas. The drying rate of apples increases with higher temperatures, while the humidity content slightly decreases.

The Effect of Material Thickness, Load Density, External Airflow, and Relative Humidity on the Drying Efficiency and Quality of EHD-Dried Apples

Anjaly Paul et al.

Summary: Electrohydrodynamic drying is a new non-thermal technique for dehydrating heat-sensitive foods. The intensity of EHD drying is affected by humidity, slice thickness, and load density, with minimal impact on product quality. Compared to hot air drying, EHD drying has lower energy consumption.

Evaluation of the growth, storage root yield, proximate composition, and mineral content of colored sweet potato genotypes

Md Mokter Hossain et al.

Summary: The storage roots and leaves of sweet potato are potential sources of human nutrition, and variations exist in the growth, yield, and nutritional contents of different genotypes. Sweet potato leaves are rich in protein, fiber, and minerals, particularly calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium, and can be consumed to combat malnutrition.

Extension of the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) model for sorption of gas mixtures on the solid substances

Masoud Saberi et al.

Summary: The BET model, in its original or refined form (GAB), is commonly used to study the multilayer sorption of pure gases and vapors on various solids. This study theoretically extended the BET model for predicting gas mixtures sorption on solids, and derived the extended GAB model. The extended model accurately predicted the adsorption behavior of gas mixtures on different solids, making it a simple and useful tool for understanding physical sorption processes.

Investigating the Effect of Different Drying Strategies on the Quality Parameters of Daucus carota L. Using Dynamic Process Control and Measurement Techniques

Sharvari Raut et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the understanding of how different drying strategies at varying temperatures affect the dynamic drying behavior and quality of organic products like carrots. It was found that the application of different drying strategies significantly impacts both product quality and overall process efficiency. Specifically, controlling product temperature led to shorter drying times and higher total carotenoid retention, but also resulted in significant color changes. Additionally, the use of non-invasive measurement techniques such as an infrared camera proved to be reliable in detecting product phase transitions during drying.

Convective drying of highly shrinkable vegetables: New method on obtaining the parameters of the reaction engineering approach (REA) framework

Shilei Yang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a new approach for obtaining drying kinetics model parameters by rearranging heat and mass transfer equations, which allows for modeling highly shrinkable vegetables without concerning shrinkage. The results show good agreement between modeled moisture content and temperature profiles with experimental data, supported by high R-2 values.
