Advanced Technologies Applied to Enhance Properties and Structure of Films and Coatings: a Review

Victoria Hermes de Vargas et al.

Summary: Biopolymer films and coatings, as sustainable alternatives to traditional petroleum-based materials, have advantages in terms of biodegradability. However, their properties need improvement to compete at an industrial level. Physical treatments such as ohmic heating, ultrasound, and ultraviolet radiation are being explored to enhance the development of films and coatings. These technologies can alter the properties and structure of the films, offering an alternative to conventional methods. Further research is needed to better understand the mechanisms of each technology to tailor biopolymer films and coatings for specific applications.

Effect of OHMIC heating and ultrasound on functional properties of biodegradable gelatin-based films

Victoria Hermes de Vargas et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of ohmic heating and ultrasound on the functional properties of biodegradable gelatin-based films. The results showed that both treatments altered the mechanical properties, structural order, and thermal stability of the films, but had no effect on film thickness, moisture content, water solubility, and biodegradability.

Preparation and characterization of gelatin films by transglutaminase cross-linking combined with ethanol precipitation or Hofmeister effect

Lin Peng et al.

Summary: The gelatin films were prepared using ethanol precipitation and Hofmeister effect after TG cross-linking, with ethanol precipitation significantly improving mechanical properties and visual sensory of the films. However, the migration issue of (NH4)2SO4 under low gelatin concentration limited the application of Hofmeister effect.

Tuning structure and properties of gelatin edible films through pullulan dialdehyde crosslinking

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: Crosslinking gelatin edible films with oxidized polysaccharides, such as pullulan dialdehyde (PDA), can significantly alter the structure and properties of the films. The molecular weight of PDA plays a crucial role in affecting the network structure and properties of the gelatin films. Overall, PDA crosslinking is a potential alternative for tuning the structure and properties of gelatin edible films.

Incorporation of gelatin improves toughness of collagen films with a homo-hierarchical structure

Jing Xiao et al.

Summary: The study showed that adding gelatin significantly increased the toughness of collagen films, with the highest performance seen in films containing 10 wt% type A gelatin. However, crosslinking with TGase compromised the benefits of type A gelatin, while type B gelatin showed slight improvement. Hydrogen bonds were found to form between collagen and gelatin according to the results of the Fourier transformation infrared analysis.

Wipawee Theerawitayaart et al.

Summary: Films fabricated with oxidized linoleic acid-modified gelatin or linoleic acid-added gelatin showed lower water-vapor permeability and improved mechanical properties during 8 weeks of storage. The addition of linoleic acid resulted in changes in color and transparency of the films, as well as increased lipid oxidation reactions.

Characterization of bio-nanocomposite films based on gelatin/polyvinyl alcohol blend reinforced with bacterial cellulose nanowhiskers for food packaging applications

Hossein Haghighi et al.

Summary: Bacterial cellulose nanowhiskers (BCNW) were successfully incorporated into a gelatin-polyvinyl alcohol (GL/PVA) blend film matrix, improving water barrier and mechanical properties of the film. The addition of BCNW did not affect the transparency of the films, indicating that BCNW were uniformly dispersed at the nanoscale.
