On locally embedded two-scale solution for wall-bounded turbulent flows

C. Chen et al.

Summary: Recent findings on wall-bounded turbulence have led to the development of a new modelling method to capture the influence of large-scale coherent structures and scale-interaction on near-wall turbulence. This paper presents a two-scale approach to simulate this influence and validates its effectiveness.

Interaction between near-wall streaks and large-scale motions in turbulent channel flows

Zisong Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that the large-scale motions in the outer region of wall-bounded flows have a top-down influence on the spanwise motion of near-wall streaks. However, the density of streaks is weakly related to LSMs. Numerical experiments also showed that near-wall streaks merging is not strongly correlated with the generation of LSMs.

Summary: In this study, a generalised quasilinear (GQL) approximation in turbulent channel flow is investigated, revealing important physical differences and similarities compared to previous models, as well as exploring the key roles played by certain types of triadic interactions through numerical experiments.

Ascending-descending and direct-inverse cascades of Reynolds stresses in turbulent Couette flow

Alessandro Chiarini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interaction between small- and large-scale structures in a turbulent plane Couette flow using the anisotropic generalized Kolmogorov equations. Both bottom-up and top-down processes are considered, with a particular focus on the wall-normal direction. The findings reveal the involvement of large-scale motions in the production and redistribution of turbulent fluctuations, with complex interactions and cascades occurring within different scale ranges.

Interactions between scales in wall turbulence: phase relationships, amplitude modulation and the importance of critical layers

Ian Jacobi et al.

Summary: This study presents a framework for predicting the interactions between motion and stress fluctuations in wall turbulence, derived from approximations to the Navier-Stokes equations. The model predictions are found to be consistent with observations, suggesting an effective approach for predicting the relationship between different-scale motions and stresses in wall turbulence.

Large-to-small scale frequency modulation analysis in wall-bounded turbulence via visibility networks

Giovanni Iacobello et al.

Summary: This study focuses on scale interaction in wall-bounded turbulence, specifically on the frequency modulation (FM) mechanism of large scales on small-scale velocity fluctuations. Through the use of the natural visibility graph approach, the network degree centrality is shown to capture FM in velocity signals at different Reynolds numbers. Results demonstrate that the visibility graph is a parameter-free tool that is effective and robust for detecting FM in wall-bounded turbulent flows. Overall, the visibility network-based approach proves to be a reliable tool for systematically investigating scale interaction mechanisms in wall-bounded turbulence.

An isolated logarithmic layer

Yongseok Kwon et al.

Summary: A novel numerical experiment is conducted to isolate the multiscale dynamics of the logarithmic layer of wall-bounded turbulent flows. Despite some differences, the modified flow system reproduces the kinematics and dynamics of natural logarithmic layers well, supporting the idea that the logarithmic layer has its own autonomous dynamics. This suggests that the very large-scale motions of wall-bounded flows are not an intrinsic part of the logarithmic-layer dynamics.

Global energy budgets in turbulent Couette and Poiseuille flows

Andrea Andreolli et al.

Summary: The turbulent plane Poiseuille and Couette flows have the same geometry but are driven by pressure gradient and shear, respectively. A new concept of flow efficiency and effectiveness is introduced to compare different flows, showing that Couette flows are less efficient but more effective due to their more effective laminar component. They dissipate a smaller percentage of total power via turbulent dissipation, attributed to stronger large-scale structures contributing less significantly to dissipation.
