Skin-friction and heat-transfer decompositions in hypersonic transitional and turbulent boundary layers

Dehao Xu et al.

Summary: The analysis of the decompositions of the skin-friction and heat-transfer coefficients in hypersonic transitional and turbulent boundary layers reveals that the overshoot phenomena in wall skin friction and heat transfer are mainly caused by the change in mean velocity profiles and the viscous dissipation, respectively. These observations differ from previous findings that attribute the overshoot to the Reynolds shear stress and Reynolds heat flux. Additionally, it is observed that the strongly cooled wall temperature and high Mach number can slightly affect the contribution of the Reynolds shear stress and weaken the contribution of mean convection due to compressibility effects. Moreover, the relative contributions of mean convection, pressure dilatation, viscous dissipation, and the Reynolds heat flux increase with wall temperature.

Effect of compressibility on the small-scale structures in hypersonic turbulent boundary layer

Dehao Xu et al.

Summary: The effects of wall temperature and local compressibility on small-scale structures, local flow topology, and enstrophy production in the hypersonic turbulent boundary layer are numerically studied. The decrease in wall temperature significantly enhances unstable and non-focal topologies near the wall, mainly due to stronger compressibility and more sheet-like structures.

Contribution of flow topology to the kinetic energy flux in hypersonic turbulent boundary layer

Dehao Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the contributions of various flow topologies to the subgrid-scale flux of kinetic energy in hypersonic turbulent boundary layer. The results show that the dominance of different flow topologies varies with Mach numbers, wall temperature ratios and filter widths. Wall temperature has a significant effect on the contributions of different flow topologies in the near-wall region.

Dynamic nonlinear algebraic models with scale-similarity dynamic procedure for large-eddy simulation of turbulence

Zelong Yuan et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new dynamic nonlinear algebraic model for subgrid-scale (SGS) stress in large-eddy simulation. The model adaptively calculates the coefficients through scale-similarity relation, resulting in considerably better predictions compared to conventional models. The model accurately predicts turbulent statistics and spatial structures in reasonable agreement with filtered DNS data.

Effect of wall temperature on the kinetic energy transfer in a hypersonic turbulent boundary layer

Dehao Xu et al.

Summary: The study shows that a cold wall temperature can enhance the local reverse transfer of kinetic energy and suppress the local direct transfer. The average filtered spatial convection and average filtered viscous dissipation dominate near the wall, while the average subgrid-scale flux of kinetic energy peaks in the buffer layer. Helmholtz decomposition reveals a strong transfer of the solenoidal component of fluctuating kinetic energy in the buffer layer and a significant transfer of the dilatational component in the near-wall region.

Toward neural-network-based large eddy simulation: application to turbulent channel flow

Jonghwan Park et al.

Summary: The study developed a subgrid-scale model using a fully connected neural network and conducted both a priori and a posteriori tests to evaluate its prediction performance. Results showed that while the NN-based SGS model can provide good predictions under certain conditions, it also exhibited stability issues in some cases.

Physical invariance in neural networks for subgrid-scale scalar flux modeling

Hugo Frezat et al.

Summary: In this paper, a new strategy is presented to model subgrid-scale scalar flux in a three-dimensional turbulent incompressible flow using physics-informed neural networks (NNs). By incorporating classical transformation invariances and symmetries into the model as hard and soft constraints, the proposed model outperforms purely data-driven models and parametric state-of-the-art subgrid-scale models in simulation-based experiments. The considered invariances act as regularizers on physical metrics during prior evaluation, improving stability and performance of the model in large-eddy simulations and enabling generalization to unseen regimes.

Artificial neural network-based spatial gradient models for large-eddy simulation of turbulence

Yunpeng Wang et al.

Summary: By using artificial neural network-based spatial gradient models, large-eddy simulation successfully models the subgrid-scale stress, achieving higher efficiency and accuracy. The model has a lower computational cost and can adapt to different filter widths, providing an attractive solution to the closure problem in turbulence large-eddy simulation.

A dynamic spatial gradient model for the subgrid closure in large-eddy simulation of turbulence

Yunpeng Wang et al.

Summary: The DSGM model is proposed for SGS closure in LES, incorporating velocity gradients at neighboring LES grids to improve SGS stress accuracy without the need for a priori knowledge. The introduction of the SSEV model as artificial viscosity effectively mimics the flux of kinetic energy to smaller scales, enhancing LES accuracy. Results suggest that the DSGM framework is well-suited for highly accurate LES of turbulence.
