Morphometry and histology to assess the maturity stage of three endangered devil ray species (Elasmobranchii: Mobulidae) from the Gulf of California

Javier Noe Serrano-Lopez et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe and collect data on the reproductive activity of three endangered species of the genus Mobula in the Gulf of California, in order to assess the feasibility of population recovery. The results suggest that there is still much biological knowledge to be gained about these species, and strict conservation measures should be enforced, especially in countries where fishing occurs.

Half a century of global decline in oceanic sharks and rays

Nathan Pacoureau et al.

Summary: Overfishing is the primary cause of marine defaunation, with global abundance of oceanic sharks and rays declining by 71% since 1970. Three-quarters of the species in this important assemblage are now at risk of extinction. Urgent measures, such as strict fishing prohibitions and science-based catch limits, are needed to prevent further population collapse and promote species recovery.
