Structural and biochemical basis of Arabidopsis FERONIA receptor kinase-mediated early signaling initiation

Summary: This study crystallized the core kinase domain (FER-KD) of RLK FERONIA (FER) and its mutants in an unphosphorylated state. The crystal structure revealed an unexpected active conformation for unphosphorylated FER-KD. Further experiments showed that FER-KD is a dual-specificity kinase and its autophosphorylation occurs through an intermolecular mechanism. This study provides insights into the activation and regulatory mechanism of FER, serving as a paradigm for early steps in RLK signaling initiation.
