Its genome contains a large amount of transposable elements, which are associated with the insect's endosymbiotic state. Compared to other beetles, S. oryzae has undergone a high rate of gene expansion. Reconstruction of host-symbiont metabolic networks revealed that S. pierantonius relies on the host for essential substances.
