The interactive effects of ethinylestradiol and progesterone on transcriptional expression of genes along the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis in embryonic zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Jiefeng Tan et al.

Summary: Progestins and estrogens have interactive effects on the transcriptional level of the HPT axis in zebrafish embryos, with their mixtures showing higher toxicity than individual chemicals. The developmental and neurotoxic effects of Gestodene and 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol on zebrafish indicate potential risks on both the gene expression and whole organismal level.

Impacts of endocrine disrupting chemicals on reproduction in wildlife and humans

V. L. Marlatt et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the current knowledge of the impacts of EDCs on reproductive success in wildlife and humans, with a focus on retrospective assessment and laboratory-based experiments. The evidence suggests that anthropogenic chemicals negatively impact reproduction by altering endocrine system function, particularly in aquatic species. Similar effects are observed in mammalian wildlife and humans in epidemiological studies. Further research is needed on the implications of chemical exposures during development and the potential for long-term reproductive effects. Field-based observations and long-term population level studies are key to addressing knowledge gaps.

Occurrence and distribution of natural and synthetic progestins, androgens, and estrogens in soils from agricultural production areas in China

Xingjian Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the widespread occurrence of 34 sex hormones in agriculture soils across different provinces in China, with androgens and progestins being the most dominant groups. Significant correlations were found between the concentrations of different types of sex hormones, suggesting similar sources. Population, poultry and swine slaughter, and soil organic carbon content were significantly correlated with the concentrations of sex hormones, indicating their contribution to the distribution in soils. Risk analysis showed medium to high risks posed by some sex hormones in agroecosystems, emphasizing the importance of optimizing manure fertilization strategies to mitigate these risks.

Occurrence and fate of androg ens, progestogens and glucocorticoids in two swine farms with integrated wastewater treatment systems

Jin-Na Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and fate of steroid hormones in wastewater and feces from two swine farms in South China, revealing potential ecological risks posed by these hormones, especially some synthetic ones. The study also found that wastewater treatment systems in the swine farms were effective in removing most of the target steroid hormones, but some synthetic steroids still posed high risks to aquatic organisms.

Iron Minerals Mediated Interfacial Hydrolysis of Chloramphenicol Antibiotic under Limited Moisture Conditions

Dingding Wu et al.

Summary: The moisture content on iron mineral surfaces plays a crucial role in catalyzing the hydrolysis of antibiotics; competition of water molecules for reactive sites can inhibit the hydrolytic reaction when the surface water content exceeds 10 wt %. Iron oxides exhibit efficient catalytic performance for antibiotic hydrolysis under limited moisture conditions, with distinctive catalytic processes depending on surface properties.
