Intracellular β1-Adrenergic Receptors and Organic Cation Transporter 3 Mediate Phospholamban Phosphorylation to Enhance Cardiac Contractility

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed the presence of a pool of beta(1)AR associated with the SR in mouse hearts, which play a critical role in PKA-mediated phosphorylation of phospholamban and cardiac contractility. Activation of these intracellular beta(1)ARs relies on catecholamine transport via OCT3.

Cardiac contractility of the African sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus: role of extracellular Ca2+, sarcoplasmic reticulum, and β-adrenergic stimulation

Diana Amaral Monteiro et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that contraction is strongly regulated by extracellular Ca2+ and the ventricular tissue of African catfish is responsive to beta-adrenergic stimulation, improving cardiac pumping capacity. The expression patterns of NCX, SERCA, and PLN in African catfish myocardium indicate both mechanisms for Ca2+ transport contribute to Ca2+ activator.

Impact of 2,4-D and fipronil on the tropical midge Chironomus sancticaroli (Diptera: Chironomidae)

Thandy Junio da Silva Pinto et al.

Summary: Increased use of pesticides in conventional agriculture poses potential environmental risks. This study evaluated the functional implications of environmental realistic concentrations of the herbicide 2,4-D and the insecticide fipronil on the native tropical chironomid Chironomus sancticaroli. Results showed that fipronil at realistic concentrations may have serious ecological implications for C. sancticaroli populations and a mixture with the herbicide 2,4-D can have synergistic effects, potentiating the risks to the aquatic ecosystem.

Short-term effects of pesticide fipronil on behavioral and physiological endpoints of Daphnia magna

Adam Bownik et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the short-term effects of FIP on Daphnia magna, showing that FIP induced reduction of swimming speed and distance traveled in a concentration- and time-dependent manner at all the concentrations used. The results indicate that behavioral and physiological endpoints of Daphnia magna are reliable and valuable sublethal indicators of toxic alterations induced by FIP.

Physiological biomarkers and fisheries management

Pablo Brosset et al.

Summary: Physiological biomarkers play an important role in fish and wildlife management, but their application in marine fish stock management and recovery plans is relatively limited. Consideration of five key issues is necessary for the implementation of physiological biomarkers in fisheries management, including the selection of relevant biomarkers, identification of species-specific biomarkers, compatibility with routine scientific surveys, use as early warning signals and complementary indicators, and how they can help refine long-term population dynamic projections.

Summary: The increased use of fipronil insecticide has raised concerns regarding its toxicity to non-target organisms. Recent studies have focused on the degradation and removal of fipronil residues from the environment, but a comprehensive review summarizing these findings is still lacking.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the pharmacokinetic profile of fipronil in mice, dogs, and cats, and evaluate its effects on emotional and cognitive behaviors of dogs and cats using data obtained from mice. The results showed that fipronil is distributed throughout the body of mice and metabolized primarily in the liver. Fipronil and its metabolite had longer half-lives in dogs and cats compared to mice.

Antonela Santillan Deiu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the biomarker responses and distribution patterns of fipronil in different matrices after exposure in juvenile P. lineatus. Results showed that fipronil induced oxidative stress in P. lineatus, affecting the antioxidant defense system. The presence of fipronil in aquatic environments can generate oxidative stress in P. lineatus, indicating the species' high sensitivity to the deleterious effects of fipronil and its metabolites.
