State of the art of geopolymers: A review

Hengels Castillo et al.

Summary: Geopolymers are emerging as an ecological alternative in construction materials, consisting of aluminosilicate sources mixed with an alkaline solution to produce a gel called N-A-S-H that controls their main properties. They offer good compression resistance, along with resistance to high temperatures and corrosive environments, showing potential as a substitute for traditional technologies like concrete, but further research is needed to determine their feasibility on an industrial scale.

Valorisation of mine waste-Part II: Resource evaluation for consolidated and mineralised mine waste using the Central African Copperbelt as an example

Glen T. Nwaila et al.

Summary: Mine waste can have long-term and occasionally catastrophic effects on the environment, but can also be a societal asset as an alternative source of critical raw materials. This study evaluates the resource potential of copper-cobalt tailings from the Central African Copperbelt using geostatistical methods, finding them to be effective tools for resource modelling.

Valorisation of mine waste-Part I: Characteristics of, and sampling methodology for, consolidated mineralised tailings by using Witwatersrand gold mines (South Africa) as an example

Glen T. Nwaila et al.

Summary: The pursuit of stable primary supplies of critical raw materials inevitably generates significant waste in mining and mineral processing. Mine waste management is expensive and prolonged, but there are economic possibilities in reusing tailings, such as the Witwatersrand gold mine tailings in South Africa. A sound framework including classification, sampling, and resource modeling is essential for the effective valorization of mine waste.

Incremental Sampling Methodology for improved characterization of Agent Orange dioxin in Vietnam soil and sediment

Alexis Lopez et al.

Summary: During the remediation of dioxin contamination at Danang airport, Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM) was used to provide a more reliable estimate, better capturing distributional heterogeneity and reducing sampling variability compared to traditional methods.

Feasibility of re-processing mine tailings to obtain critical raw materials using real options analysis

Natalia Araya et al.

Summary: Re-processing mine tailings to obtain critical raw materials can reduce new mining activities, but it requires large industrial installations and specialized technologies. When making investment decisions in new mining projects, it is crucial to consider uncertainties and risks, and develop processes and technologies that can lower capital expenditure.
