Nitrogen removal from rural domestic wastewater by subsurface wastewater infiltration system: A review

Peng Yang et al.

Summary: The subsurface wastewater infiltration system (SWIS) is widely used in rural decentralized sewage treatment due to its cost-effectiveness, low energy consumption, and high efficiency. However, the mechanisms and optimization methods for SWIS nitrogen removal have not been well summarized. This review provides an overview of the nitrogen removal efficiency and mechanism of SWIS, highlights the advantages of different types of fillers and plants used in substrate improvement, and proposes a clear adjustment range and control method for system operating parameters. It also summarizes the role of bioaugmentation in nitrogen removal and evaluates the development and application of SWIS in rural areas.

Enhanced cycling of nitrogen and metals during rapid infiltration: Implications for managed recharge

Jennifer Pensky et al.

Summary: This study presents the effects of adding a carbon-rich, permeable reactive barrier (PRB) on nitrogen cycling and trace metal mobilization during rapid infiltration. The results show that the addition of a carbon-rich PRB can improve water quality, reduce nitrogen load, and enhance the removal of dissolved nitrogen species.

Impact of temperature and biomass augmentation on biosulfur-driven autotrophic denitrification in membrane bioreactors treating real nitrate-contaminated groundwater

Ozlem Demir et al.

Summary: Nitrate contamination of groundwater is a global health concern. Autotrophic denitrification using biogenic sulfur as a substrate has emerged as a sustainable and efficient method for treating contaminated groundwater. However, the effects of moderate temperature and biomass concentration on the performance and fouling of the system were not previously investigated. The study found that optimal biomass levels can limit membrane fouling but also affect denitrification efficiency. The temperature decrease significantly reduced denitrification efficiency, which could be partly recovered through bioaugmentation.

Improving hydrogen production from the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge: Effects of cobalt and iron zero valent nanoparticles

A. Cordova-Lizama et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of zero valent iron nanoparticles (NZVI) and cobalt (CoNP) on hydrogen production from anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge. The results show that the addition of NZVI and CoNP can significantly increase hydrogen yield and promote the anaerobic digestion process of waste activated sludge.

Assessing the long-term impact of urease and nitrification inhibitor use on microbial community composition, diversity and function in grassland soil

Aoife M. Duff et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of urease inhibitors and nitrification inhibitors on soil microbial communities and biological function in grasslands. The results show that the use of inhibitors had no impact on non-target microbial communities, but had a significant effect on the nitrification process and increased N2O emissions in some treatments.

Effect of intermittent operation and shunt wastewater on pollutant removal and microbial community changes in subsurface wastewater infiltration system

Peng Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a laboratory-scale SWIS system was used to optimize the nitrogen removal capacity through intermittent operation and the shunt method. Results showed that the optimal total nitrogen removal rate was achieved with a wet-dry ratio of 1:2 and a shunt ratio of 3:1. The optimal ammonia nitrogen removal rate was obtained with a wet-dry ratio of 1:3 and a shunt ratio of 2:1. The study also demonstrated good COD and TP removal rates throughout the operation stage. The findings provide important theoretical insights for the construction and operation of SWIS in rural areas.

Yak excreta-induced changes in soil microbial communities increased the denitrification rate of marsh soil under warming conditions

Xin Fang et al.

Summary: The addition of yak excreta significantly increased the denitrification rate of marsh soil under different temperatures, but had no obvious effect on nitrate reductase and nitrite reductase as temperature increased. The diversity of the denitrifier community was reduced by excreta addition, with nirK being more sensitive to these additions and temperature changes.

Effects of moisture and physical disturbance on pore-scale oxygen content and anaerobic metabolisms in upland soils

Emily M. Lacroix et al.

Summary: Soils are the largest reservoir of carbon on Earth, with microbial respiration of soil organic carbon contributing significantly to global carbon dioxide emissions. Oxygen-depleted zones in soils play a crucial role in controlling soil microbial respiration rates, with distinct patterns of dissolved oxygen concentrations observed across different pore sizes. Disturbance of soils can enhance aeration and reduce anaerobic metabolisms, impacting soil redox and carbon dioxide efflux rates.
