Rapid prediction of flood inundation by interpolation between flood library maps for real-time applications

Wen Wang et al.

Summary: Real-time flood forecasting is crucial for flood emergency response, but conventional flood inundation models are not suitable for real-time operations. The library interpolation approach, which is widely adopted, combines pre-canned flood maps with river levels to derive flood surfaces and depths. This study investigates the procedures and performance of this approach through a case study in Australia, and introduces a new multivariate interpolation scheme to improve accuracy.

Downscaling of Precipitation for Climate Change Projections Using Multiple Machine Learning Techniques: Case Study of Shenzhen City, China

Jing-Cheng Han et al.

Summary: This study used multiple machine learning techniques to downscale future precipitation and compared the performance of different downscaling and climate models. The downscaled precipitation showed good agreement with observations, and under the SSP1-2.6 scenario, there was an increase in precipitation, while a decreasing trend was observed under the SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios.

Understanding the relationship between rainfall and flood probabilities through combined intensity-duration-frequency analysis

Korbinian Breinl et al.

Summary: This study focuses on how rainfall mechanisms and catchment characteristics influence the relationship between rainfall and flood probabilities. Regional differences in rainfall and runoff behaviors were observed, with wet catchments showing higher elasticities compared to dry catchments. Overall, catchment characteristics were found to be the dominant control on flood frequency patterns.

Impacts of changing drainage indicators on urban flood volumes in historical urbanization in the case of Northern China

Qianqian Zhou et al.

Summary: Understanding the driving forces of urban flood variations is crucial for future management strategies. This study uses GIS, SWMM flood modeling, and statistical analysis to investigate the impacts of changes in urban drainage indicators on urban floods. Results show that flood volume is more sensitive to urban development and drainage performance in urban centers, with regression models explaining over 85% of historical flood variations across spatial scales.

A review on applications of urban flood models in flood mitigation strategies

Wenchao Qi et al.

Summary: Climate change has made urban areas more vulnerable to flooding, highlighting the need for accurate assessment and improved pre-disaster strategies. Urban flood modeling is crucial for understanding, assessing, and forecasting flood conditions and impacts. However, the challenge lies in selecting models based on contextual requirements.

Mapping Coastal Flood Susceptible Areas Using Shannon's Entropy Model: The Case of Muscat Governorate, Oman

Hanan Al-Hinai et al.

Summary: This study utilized the Shannon's entropy model to predict the role of seven factors in causing floods in the Governorate of Muscat and mapping coastal flood-prone areas. The results indicated that land use and HSG are the most causative factors of flooding in the area, threatening approximately 133.5 km(2) of the extracted area with coastal floods.

Satellite imaging reveals increased proportion of population exposed to floods

B. Tellman et al.

Summary: Satellite imagery from 2000 to 2018 indicates that the proportion of global population exposed to floods is increasing, highlighting the importance of investing in flood adaptation strategies to reduce loss of life and livelihood. Changes in where and how floods occur, as well as the population exposed, are being influenced by urbanization, flood mitigation infrastructure, and settlements in floodplains. The high spatial and temporal resolution of satellite observations will enhance understanding of flood changes and adaptation methods.
