Bypass and hyperbole in soil research: Worrisome practices critically reviewed through examples

Philippe C. Baveye

Summary: The literature on soils is characterized by a significant amount of bypass and hyperbole. Bypass is related to soil aggregates, soil quality/health, soil contributions to ecosystem services and whole-soil metagenomics, while hyperbole is connected to research on biochar, the 4 per 1000 initiative, and the role of soils in achieving Sustainable Development Goals. The need to curb these deviations is emphasized.

The 'soil health' metaphor: Illuminating or illusory?

H. Henry Janzen et al.

Summary: The concept of "soil health" as a metaphor is discussed in this article, emphasizing the importance of understanding soil in the context of its ecosystem. The authors propose that the metaphor should be used to generate understanding of relational mechanisms and lead to better management practices, rather than simply assigning a numerical value to soil quality. The continuing usefulness of the soil health metaphor depends on its ability to inspire greater reverence for soil and improve our understanding of its beneficial processes.

Combining local knowledge and soil science for integrated soil health assessments in conservation agriculture systems

Thirze D. G. Hermans et al.

Summary: This study aims to combine local knowledge and conventional soil science approaches to develop a contextualized understanding of the impact of Conservation Agriculture (CA) on soil health, as well as understand how an integrated approach can contribute to explaining farmer decision-making on land management. By combining farmers’ observations with soil measurements, the study found that CA improved soil structure, moisture, and infiltration, highlighting the importance of integrating local knowledge with scientific measurements in sustainable land management practices.

Global data on earthworm abundance, biomass, diversity and corresponding environmental properties

Helen R. P. Phillips et al.

Summary: Earthworms are important ecosystem engineers, but their diversity and distribution are not well known at large spatial scales. A global dataset with information on 10,840 sites and 184 species from 60 countries has been created to assist researchers in investigating a wide variety of pressing questions related to biodiversity.
