Complex impacts of hydraulic fracturing return fluids on soil microbial community respiration, structure and functional potentials

Cheng Zhong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impacts of FPW on soil microbiota in the Montney Formation of western Canada. The results show that soil type plays a crucial role in the microbial community response to FPW exposure. FPW exposure leads to reduced soil respiration, changes in microbial community structure and functional potentials. Additionally, FPW-exposed soils exhibit higher species richness and more unique functional genes. These findings highlight the complex impacts of microbial communities following FPW exposure and the site-specific effects in spills evaluation and agricultural reuse of FPW.

Cost analysis of wastewater production from conventional and unconventional oil and gas wells

Ashkan Zolfaghari et al.

Summary: This study compares the management costs of flowback and produced water (FPW) from conventional and hydraulically fractured wells using a comprehensive database of oil and gas wells in the Montney Formation, Canada. The results show that conventional and HF oil wells have similar oil-water ratios, while conventional gas wells have higher gas-water ratios than HF gas wells. Master curves for revenue and FPW management costs are provided to analyze the profitability of hydrocarbon recovery processes.

Impact of food safety regulations on agricultural trade: Evidence from China's import refusal data

Dongsheng Sun et al.

Summary: The evolving food safety regulations in China have a significant impact on food imports, tending to restrict trade and showing an asymmetry between countries with lower food safety standards and China's evolving food safety standards. This impact is more pronounced for state-owned enterprises, which are more affected by China's import refusal measures than non-SOEs.

Comparison of the Hydraulic Fracturing Water Cycle in China and North America: A Critical Review

Cheng Zhong et al.

Summary: The sustainability of the hydraulic fracturing water cycle is a topic of debate in North America and China. Common environmental risks exist in the two largest HF regions, with challenges such as water stress, contamination of aquatic and soil systems, and induced seismicity. Standardized practices and ecotoxicological studies are needed to address these issues and prevent adverse effects.
