Heterogeneous distributions of heavy metals in the soil-groundwater system empowers the knowledge of the pollution migration at a smelting site

Jiaqing Zeng et al.

Summary: Heavy metal contaminations from smelting activities pose a global problem, affecting more than 30% of industrial lands. These contaminants migrate from soil to groundwater and further spread, posing persistent hazards to human health and the environment. The migration behaviors and patterns of four persistent pollutants (Cd, Zn, Pb, and As) in a soil-groundwater system were studied, revealing their heterogeneous distribution characteristics. The findings indicate that heavy metals migrate vertically downwards in the vadose zone by gravity and are likely dominantly influenced by solute transport in the saturated aquifer. The migration potential of the heavy metals, ranked as Cd > Zn > Pb > As, reflects their associated environmental risks. External pollutant input and hydrogeological characteristics were identified as the main factors controlling the migration and transformation of heavy metals.

Potential driving forces and probabilistic health risks of heavy metal accumulation in the soils from an e-waste area, southeast China

Hanrui Chen et al.

Summary: The integrated analysis of heavy metal distribution characteristics, health risks, and source identification in the area around an abandoned electronic waste dismantling center in China revealed that cadmium and copper were the primary soil pollutants causing high ecological risks. The probabilistic health risk assessment indicated acceptable levels for non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks, but children were more susceptible to heavy metal soil contamination than adults. The sensitivity analyses showed that total contents of soil heavy metals and soil ingestion rate were the dominant factors affecting human health.

Xuexia Li et al.

Summary: The accumulation and source apportionment of heavy metals (HMs) in agricultural soils in Southwest China are of global concern. This study investigated the distribution, accumulation, and sources of HMs in artisanal zinc smelting regions in Guizhou Province using various analytical techniques. It was found that anthropogenic activities, particularly artisanal zinc smelting, contributed significantly to the enrichment of HMs in topsoil.

Identifying sources and transport routes of heavy metals in soil with different land uses around a smelting site by GIS based PCA and PMF

Richmond Anaman et al.

Summary: This study successfully identified the sources, transport routes, and apportionment of heavy metals in soil around a smelting site using principal component analysis, positive matrix factorization, and geographic information system mapping. The results showed that the soil was contaminated with various heavy metals, with smelter emissions and soil parent materials being the primary sources. GIS visualization revealed that surface runoff and atmospheric deposition were the main transport routes for the heavy metals, with different land uses receiving varying degrees of contamination.
