Spatial spillover effect of carbon emission trading on carbon emission reduction: Empirical data from pilot regions in China

Zhiguo Li et al.

Summary: This paper conducts a quasi-natural experiment to estimate the comprehensive impact of China's carbon trading policy launched in 2013 on carbon emissions. The empirical results show that the policy has significantly reduced carbon emissions in the pilot regions and has also led to spatial spillover effects. The effect of the policy on carbon emissions continues to increase over the long term, while the spatial spillover effect gradually decreases as distance increases. Additionally, the policy contributes to the decline of carbon intensity, but the transformation of energy structure hinders carbon emission reduction in the long term.

Research on the impact mechanism of heterogeneous environmental regulation on enterprise green technology innovation

Liping Wang et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of environmental regulations on green technology innovation (GTI) of Chinese A-share listed enterprises from 2010 to 2019. It categorizes environmental regulations into three types: command-based, market-based, and voluntary, and explores the joint effect of enterprise research and development (R&D) investment and government support. The research findings reveal that both command-based and market-based regulations stimulate GTI, while voluntary regulations hinder it. Moreover, the study highlights the moderating role of R&D investment and government support in the relationship between environmental regulations and GTI. Additionally, it identifies the need for improvement in China's GTI transformation rate and recognizes the heterogeneous impact of environmental regulations on GTI based on location, ownership nature, factor density, and industry type.

What are the roles of green technology innovation and ICT employment in lowering carbon intensity in China? A city-level analysis of the spatial effects

Hongye Sun

Summary: China is striving to establish a feasible approach to promote economic structural transition, enhance energy efficiency, and take on international responsibilities. This paper explores the linkage between green technology innovation (GTI), Information and Communication Technology (ICT) employment, and low carbon development. The empirical analysis reveals that GTI and ICT play crucial roles in reducing local carbon intensity and have positive and negative spatial spillover effects on neighboring cities. The study also demonstrates that ICT indirectly contributes to lowering carbon intensity through GTI. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the impact of GTI and ICT in lowering carbon intensity is greater in the Eastern region compared to the Middle-Western region. Therefore, policymakers should focus on enhancing regional collaboration, promoting the diffusion of informatization, and strengthening the absorptive capacity of technological innovation.
