Impact of the substrate composition on enhanced biological phosphorus removal during formation of aerobic granular sludge

Lennert Dockx et al.

Summary: Stable biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is achieved when VFAs are used as the sole or mixed substrate, leading to the presence of Accumulibacter and anaerobic P-release. In contrast, systems utilizing amino acids and glucose as the sole carbon source exhibit moderate anaerobic dissolved organic carbon uptake, resulting in unstable EBPR.

Response of Endolithic Chroococcidiopsis Strains From the Polyextreme Atacama Desert to Light Radiation

Maria Cristina Casero et al.

Summary: Cyanobacteria exposed to high solar radiation utilize defense mechanisms such as avoidance, antioxidant systems, and production of photoprotective compounds like scytonemin. Two cyanobacterial strains from the Atacama Desert were examined, with one strain showing lower acclimation capacity and higher accumulation of reactive oxygen species in response to light radiation compared to the other strain.

Ionic response of algal-bacterial granular sludge system during biological phosphorus removal from wastewater

Jixiang Wang et al.

Summary: Biological phosphorus removal involves changes in Ac-, K+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ in wastewater, with the presence of algae not beneficial for PAOs to remove P but more K+ and P uptake by algae in AB-AGS suggesting its potential for manufacturing biofertilizer.

Aerobic granular sludge treating low-strength municipal wastewater: Efficient carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus removal with hydrolysis-acidification pretreatment

Cheng Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that reducing cycle length and implementing hydrolysis-acidification pretreatment could enhance anaerobic COD uptake, leading to a decrease in effluent TN and TP concentrations to meet Grade IA of effluent standards in China. Furthermore, the pretreatment improved the COD storage, phosphorus release, nitrification-denitrification process, and phosphorus uptake in different phases of the treatment process.

High Diversity and Functional Potential of Undescribed Acidobacteriota in Danish Wastewater Treatment Plants

Jannie Munk Kristensen et al.

Summary: Microbial communities in Danish full-scale activated sludge wastewater treatment plants are rich in Acidobacteriota taxa, which show high metabolic diversity and potential involvement in nitrogen and phosphorus removal and iron reduction. Genome annotation and metabolic reconstruction of Acidobacteriota metagenome-assembled genomes reveal their potential to be polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) with intracellular storage of key compounds.

Performance, sludge characteristics and microbial community in a salt-tolerant aerobic granular SBR by seeding anaerobic granular sludge

Lei Lei et al.

Summary: The study explored an efficient strategy for cultivating salt-tolerant aerobic granular sludge (SAGS) by seeding anaerobic granular sludge in a SBR, which showed high removal efficiency of COD, NH4+-N, and total nitrogen at 3% salinity. Bacterial community analysis identified dominant AOB and denitrifiers as Nitrosomonas and Defluviimonas, respectively, with low abundance of Nitrospira. qPCR results revealed decreased abundance of nirS and nirK under high salinity, explaining the lower TN removal efficiency and NO2--N accumulation.

Laila Dina Amalia Purba et al.

Summary: The study found that anaerobic granular sludge can induce rapid granulation process to produce aerobic granular sludge with more desirable characteristics. The developed granular sludge exhibited excellent settling velocity and low SVI30, with enhanced total phosphorus removal in the reactor containing anaerobic granular sludge.
