Technologies for municipal solid waste management: Current status, challenges, and future perspectives

Shamshad Khan et al.

Summary: This study found that MSW generation is increasing in provinces such as Shandong, Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Fujian, but declining in other eastern coastal cities, provinces, and special zones. Municipal solid waste in China is mainly treated using landfill, incineration, and composting techniques, with significantly lower usage efficiency than in developed countries. The effectiveness of China's municipal waste management system needs to be improved.

Simultaneous partial Nitrification, ANAMMOX and denitrification (SNAD)-A review of critical operating parameters and reactor configurations

Virender Singh et al.

Summary: Nitrogen removal is a crucial aspect of wastewater treatment. Traditional biological nitrogen removal processes are effective but costly. The integration of ANAMMOX bacteria with shortcut nitrogen removal processes has provided a sustainable solution, although practical limitations remain. The SNAD process, which involves a synergistic relationship among AOB, ANAMMOX, and denitrifiers, offers a promising alternative with high nitrogen removal efficiency. This review examines the recent developments in the SNAD process, including critical process parameters and different reactor configurations, and provides guidance for future engineering applications.
