High-efficiency overall alkaline seawater splitting: using a nickel-iron sulfide nanosheet array as a bifunctional electrocatalyst

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: The use of nickel-iron sulfide nanosheet array on nickel foam as a bifunctional electrocatalyst demonstrates high-performance and cost-effective electrolysis of seawater for hydrogen production. It delivers a current density of 500 mA cm(-2) at overpotentials of 300 and 347 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline seawater respectively. Moreover, it only requires a cell voltage of 1.85 V to drive 500 mA cm(-2) in a two-electrode electrolyzer, and shows strong stability for at least 50 hours of electrolysis in alkaline seawater, outperforming recently reported catalyst electrodes for seawater splitting.

Recent Advances on Heteroatom-Doped Porous Carbon-Based Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Xue Li et al.

Summary: Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are considered as an alternative to fossil energy sources. However, the high cost and susceptibility to poisoning of catalysts limit their large-scale commercial application. Heteroatom-doped porous carbon has attracted attention due to its high specific surface area and properties conferred by heteroatom doping. Various methods for preparing heteroatom-doped porous carbons and their application in catalysts are discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects of heteroatoms in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysis are presented.

Modification of the Electrochemical Surface Oxide Formation and the Hydrogen Oxidation Activity of Ruthenium by Strong Metal Support Interactions

Bjoern M. Stuehmeier et al.

Summary: The commercialization of PEMFCs and water electrolyzers is hindered by the durability and high cost of noble metal catalysts. Alternative support materials can alter the properties of a catalyst through SMSI, which can prevent platinum oxidation and suppress oxygen reduction. This study reports a novel Ru/TiOx/C catalyst with partially encapsulated Ru particles in a Ru/TiOx-composite matrix supported on a carbon support. After reductive heat-treatment, the catalyst shows improved stability and activity for the hydrogen oxidation reaction compared to a reference catalyst.
