Addressing context dependence in ecology

Jane A. Catford et al.

Summary: Context dependence is a key factor in explaining diverse outcomes in ecology, and it arises when the conditions under which a relationship is observed change. It can lead to contradictory conclusions and limit the transferability of research findings. Through examples from biological invasions, two types of context dependence, mechanistic and apparent, are identified.

Restoration in the face of changing climate: importance of persistence, priority effects, and species diversity

Brian Wilsey

Summary: Grasslands, as extensive and biodiverse ecosystems highly altered by humans, provide an excellent model system for restoration ecology. The emerging issue of global change requires a focus on designing seed mixes with high diversity to cope with novel conditions. More research on persistence and the importance of stochastic processes in restoration are needed to improve restoration success, as grasslands provide valuable ecosystem services and cultural significance.

Priority effects and ecological restoration

Emanuela W. A. Weidlich et al.

Summary: Priority effects refer to how the order of species arrival at a site can impact the establishment, growth, or reproduction of later arriving species. Research has shown that even small delays in arrival time can lead to differences in subsequent community composition and ecosystem functions. However, there is limited understanding of the long-term stability of these effects, and more studies are needed in different ecosystems to fully operationalize the concept for restoration.
