Global analysis of floral longevity reveals latitudinal gradients and biotic and abiotic correlates

Bo Song et al.

Summary: This study provides a global quantification of floral longevity, showing that it is longer at higher latitudes in both hemispheres. The study also identifies temperature and pollen number as important factors affecting floral longevity, while other factors such as compatibility status, flower size, pollination mode, and growth form have no significant effects.

Flower phenological events and duration pattern is influenced by temperature and elevation in Dhauladhar mountain range of Lesser Himalaya

Mustaqeem Ahmad et al.

Summary: Studying phenology is an effective way to monitor how plant species interact and respond to environmental conditions. This study observed shifts in flowering phenological events of 24 herbaceous species with changing elevation and temperature. Results showed significant effects of elevation and soil temperature on the flowering phenological events, with high plasticity in high elevation regions and a key role of temperature in influencing the initiation and duration of these events.

Revealing the functional traits linked to hidden environmental factors in community assembly

Valerio D. Pillar et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new method to identify functional traits that best predict community assembly through fuzzy-weighting trait similarities and species co-occurrences, and successfully identifies relevant traits in simulated and real-world communities. The method shows high power and accurate type I error, and provides insights on underlying environmental and biotic factors that may not always be accessible or measured.

Flowering Phenology Adjustment and Flower Longevity in a South American Alpine Species

Mary T. K. Arroyo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the flowering phenology adjustment and flower longevity compensation hypotheses in an alpine species in the Andes of central Chile. The results suggest that while high-elevation populations may exhibit differences in flowering timing, flower longevity is not extended at higher elevations to compensate for the decrease in pollination rates.

Plant community persistence strategy is elevation-specific

Sergey Rosbakh et al.

Summary: Results indicate that the dominant persistence strategy varies depending on environmental variability. In lowlands, persistence is mainly achieved by persistent and dense soil seed banks along with extended clonal growth, while in alpine communities, the main persistence strategy is increased adult longevity.

Intraspecific morphological variation of Bellidiastrum michelii (Asteraceae) along a 1,155 m elevation gradient in the Tatra Mountains

Piotr Kieltyk

Summary: In this study, significant morphological variation was observed in Bellidiastrum michelii plants across an elevation gradient in the Tatra Mountains in Central Europe. Plant size and floral traits decreased significantly with increasing elevation, while the number of flowers produced remained constant. These changes in morphology may be influenced by various abiotic and biotic factors along elevation gradients.
