Experimental Assessment and Numerical Modelling of Conforming and Non-Conforming RC Frames with and without Infills

Gerardo M. Verderame et al.

Summary: This study investigates the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete frames, both conforming and non-conforming to modern seismic codes. The non-conforming frames are prone to shear failures involving infill panel and RC columns/joints. A proposed modeling approach is able to simulate these shear failures, contributing to more reliable numerical simulations of RC buildings.

In-plane/out-of-plane interaction of strong masonry infills: From cyclic tests to out-of-plane verifications

Paolo Morandi et al.

Summary: Research has mainly focused on the seismic response of weak/slender masonry infills, with limited attention given to stronger/thicker masonry infills increasingly used in newly designed RC structures. This study investigates the in-plane and out-of-plane response of 'strong' masonry infills through experimental and numerical research, aiming to provide a simplified out-of-plane strength verification within European design procedures.

Pseudo-dynamic tests on full-scale two storeys RC frames with different infill-to-structure connections

C. Del Vecchio et al.

Summary: This study investigates the significance of the connection between infill and reinforced concrete frame on the global response and earthquake damage. The experimental program demonstrates that a better connection between infill and structure can increase the strength and stiffness of the frame, resulting in a reduction of displacement demand and an increase in shear force transmitted to the column top.

Predicting the Out-Of-Plane Seismic Strength of Unreinforced Masonry Infill Walls

Mariano Di Domenico et al.

Summary: This study presents and discusses technical codes adopted literature formulations for predicting the out-of-plane strength of unreinforced masonry infills. The influence of external load shape on infills' out-of-plane strength is considered, and strength formulations are modified accordingly. An experimental database is used to assess the predictive capacity of these models, leading to the identification of the most effective one. The selected mechanical-based model is simplified to propose a reliable formulation for predicting infills' out-of-plane strength under seismic and other external loads.

Application of hybrid simulation method for seismic performance evaluation of RC coupling beams subjected to realistic boundary condition

Jamin Park et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of axial restraint on the performance of RC coupling beams under seismic loading. By adopting a hybrid simulation method to determine the axial restraint and conducting tests, the results show that considering axial restraint during testing will have a different impact on the response of the coupling beams.

Experiment-based out-of-plane resistance of strong masonry infills for codified applications

Riccardo R. Milanesi et al.

Summary: In recent years, the typology of unreinforced masonry infills in newly designed RC structures has shifted from slender/weak panels to stronger single-whyte walls, improving construction efficiency and performance. However, the adoption of a more robust masonry solution can significantly impact the response of infilled structures, for which current standards lack proper design procedures.

Testing of a full-scale flat slab building for gravity and lateral loads

Dario Coronelli et al.

Summary: The full-scale testing of a two-storey flat slab structure was conducted in the SlabSTRESS research project, with construction and testing planned and carried out at the ELSA laboratory of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre. Seismic tests for service and ultimate actions, along with strengthening of damaged connections and measurement of deformations and damage for different loading conditions, were included in the testing program. The results obtained confirmed and extended existing knowledge in the literature, providing insight into the behavior of the structure up to failure.

A novel approach for the evaluation of the economical losses due to seismic actions on RC buildings with masonry infills

A. Rossi et al.

Summary: A novel approach for evaluating the seismic performance of RC frame buildings with masonry infill walls is proposed, considering both structural response and economic losses. A case-study comparing traditional masonry infill walls with an innovative solution is presented, with infill damage defined through laboratory tests and numerical simulations. This study provides insights on the cost-effectiveness of different infill solutions and the potential economic benefits of using innovative infill systems compared to traditional ones.
