Dual Antimicrobial Effect of Medium-Chain Fatty Acids against an Italian Multidrug Resistant Brachyspira hyodysenteriae Strain

Giulia Giovagnoni et al.

Summary: The study examined the inhibitory effect of four antibiotics and medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) on Brachyspira hyodysenteriae. It also investigated the modulation of virulence genes by sub-inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics and MCFA. The results showed a multidrug resistance pattern in the field strain and a consistent inhibitory effect of MCFA on both strains. Decanoic and dodecanoic acid were identified as the most effective MCFA, suggesting their potential as candidates for further in vivo trials.

Novel Enrofloxacin Schiff Base Metal Complexes: Synthesis, Spectroscopic Characterization, Computational Simulation and Antimicrobial Investigation against Some Food and Phyto-Pathogens

Amira A. Mohamed et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel complex H(2)Erx-en was synthesized by the condensation reaction between enrofloxacin and ethylenediamine in the presence of glacial acetic acid. The H(2)Erx-en chelate was found to exhibit four-coordinate binding with metal ions iron(III), yttrium(III), zirconium(IV), and lanthanum(III). Various analytical techniques were used to characterize the synthetic H(2)Erx-en and its chelates, including elemental analysis, spectroscopic methods, mass spectrometry, thermal studies, conductometric and magnetic measurements. The chelates showed higher conductivity than H(2)Erx-en, and the zirconium(IV) complex exhibited the most potent antibacterial activity against Salmonella typhi.

Jinfeng Liu et al.

Summary: The researchers provided a nearly complete assignment of the experimental IR spectrum of the H+(H2O)(21) water cluster, revealing the microscopic behavior of protonated water species for a better understanding of protons in water. By using high-level wavefunction theory and anharmonic vibrational quasi-degenerate perturbation theory, they demonstrated the accuracy of a new protocol for calculating the infrared spectra of complex systems.
