Propagation of scalar and tensor gravitational waves in Horndeski theory

Kei-ichiro Kubota et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a formulation for higher-order corrections of the geometrical optics expansion, applied to Horndeski theory, to probe the nature of dark energy. The equations of motion for scalar and tensor components of gravitational waves in the geometrical optics expansion are analyzed, and their evolution equations under certain conditions are derived. For generalized Brans-Dicke theories, a simple description of equations for gravitational waves in terms of an effective metric is found.

No Evidence of Kinetic Screening in Simulations of Merging Binary Neutron Stars beyond General Relativity

Miguel Bezares et al.

Summary: We have conducted fully relativistic simulations in a class of scalar-tensor theories with derivative selfinteractions and screening of local scales. Using advanced shock-capturing methods and a nonvanishing shift vector, we have successfully addressed the issues faced by previous attempts. Our findings confirm recent results in spherical symmetry, suggesting a partial breakdown of screening in black hole collapse. Additionally, we have observed that screening tends to suppress dipole scalar emission, but not the dominant quadrupole scalar mode. Our results indicate that quadrupole scalar signals can be as large as, or even larger than, those in Fierz-Jordan-Brans-Dicke theories with the same conformal coupling, within the strong-coupling scales that we can simulate.

Summary: The possibility of transient deviations of the propagation speed of gravitational waves from the speed of light at low frequencies, based on modifications of General Relativity, is discussed. The impact of these deviations on the gravitational waveforms of black hole binary mergers detectable by the LISA mission is studied. Constraints on these deviations obtainable from individual systems and a population of sources are forecasted.

Modified gravitational wave propagation with higher modes and its degeneracies with lensing

Jose Maria Ezquiaga et al.

Summary: This study investigates gravitational waves in low-energy alternatives to General Relativity (GR), comparing the WKB approach and the stationary phase approximation (SPA) for wave propagation. The results show that the WKB approach coincides with the SPA using the group velocity, in accordance with wave propagation principles. The study also explores the degeneracies between strongly-lensed GR GWs and GW propagation with modified dispersion relation (MDR), and finds that strongly-lensed GWs could be misinterpreted as modified gravity.

Summary: A hierarchical Bayesian analysis is used to extract information on cosmological and population parameters of binary black holes (BBH), with a focus on modified gravitational wave (GW) propagation effects. By analyzing data from the third gravitational wave transient catalog, constraints on the parameter Xi(0) describing this phenomenon are found. The study also examines the impact of modified GW propagation on population and cosmological analyses, showing a significant dependence of accuracy on the fiducial value of Xi(0).

Measuring the propagation speed of gravitational waves with LISA

Tessa Baker et al.

Summary: The speed of gravitational waves has been tightly constrained by recent observations, but there is possibility for transient deviations from the speed of light at lower frequencies. By studying the impact of modified General Relativity on the waveforms detectable by LISA, we can place stringent independent bounds on departures from General Relativity in unexplored low-frequency regimes.

Gravitational wave propagation beyond general relativity: waveform distortions and echoes

Jose Maria Ezquiaga et al.

Summary: This study investigates the cosmological propagation of gravitational waves beyond general relativity, considering scenarios where GWs interact with an additional tensor field using a phenomenological approach. Four distinct classes of interactions are analyzed, and solutions to the equations are obtained analytically and numerically. The study finds that tensor interactions can lead to modified GW signals with potentially different dispersion relations, affecting the coherence and detection of GW events. Various observational probes are discussed for detecting these tensor interactions using both individual GW events and population studies with ground- and space-based detectors.

Hearing gravity from the cosmos: GWTC-2 probes general relativity at cosmological scales

Jose Maria Ezquiaga

Summary: This study presents a novel approach to probe cosmological modifications of general relativity using GW data only, specifically focusing on deviations of the GW luminosity distance constrained with the astrophysical population of binary black holes. The hierarchical Bayesian analysis on the LIGO-Virgo catalog provides the strongest constraints to date on deviations from the GW luminosity distance, leading to important implications for the standard cosmological model and the determination of BBH masses. The findings suggest that testing gravity at large scales with the population of BBHs will become increasingly relevant with future catalogs, offering an independent and self-contained test of the standard cosmological model.

Dynamics of Screening in Modified Gravity

Lotte ter Haar et al.

Summary: This study examines gravitational theories that differ from general relativity to explain the accelerated expansion of the Universe without a cosmological constant. The research shows that while these theories are stable under large initial perturbations in isolated static and spherically symmetric stars, they may encounter issues when gravitational collapse is triggered. The characteristic speeds of the scalar evolution equation diverge when collapse occurs, raising doubts about predicting the dynamical evolution of screened stars in these effective field theories.

Positivity bounds on dark energy: when matter matters

Claudia de Rham et al.

Summary: Positivity bounds have been used to constrain scalar-tensor theories of dark energy, but coupling to matter fields has played a limited role. Demanding positivity when including interactions with standard matter fields leads to further constraints on the dark energy parameter space. Implementing these bounds as theoretical priors affects cosmological parameter constraints and shows that gravitational waves must travel superluminally on cosmological backgrounds in a standard UV completion.

Summary: Multiband gravitational wave astronomy involves observing gravitational waves in different frequency bands to test general relativity. By conducting multiband observations of intermediate-mass binary black holes, multiple post-Newtonian coefficients can be measured simultaneously, leading to stricter constraints on modifications to GR. The improvement from multibanding often exceeds the best bounds from individual observatories due to the lifting of degeneracies among parameters when combining information from different detectors.
